Default Flt Sgt Clemow, W J

    Hi All

Can anyone sort this one out?

In Vol 17, Alan Storr has the following crew failing to return 0n 27 Apr 1943 in Wellington, MP518 of No 221 Sqn (but this was a Mk XI struck off in 1946) so I suspect it should be MP510 (but A-B shows this belonging to 172 Sqn)

RAF Flt Lt Taylor, J L (Captain (Pilot)
    RNZAF FO Prebble, J D (2nd Pilot)
RNZAF FO Whatnall, G O (Navigator)
RNZAF Sgt Rowley, D K (Wireless Operator Air Gunner)
RAAF 403920 Flt Sgt Clemow, W J (Wireless Operator Air Gunner)
RNZAF Sgt Moyniham, T C (Wireless Operator Air Gunner)

However, in Vol 10 the same crew is listed as failing to return in NP537 of No 458 Sqn but in exactly the same circumstances as the aircraft above.

    Help?

    Malcolm

    Hi Malcolm,

I have this as MP510 of 458 Sqn but a note to the effect that the aircraft has possibly been borrowed from 172/179 Sqn for the operation.

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8248&highlight=mp510 covers some of the previous correspondence.

    Regards
    Ross

    Hi Malcolm,

I would like to point out that NP537 does not exist - it fits into the "cancelled" range.

So I suppose it may be the MP537 - Welington XII - 221 Sq - engine cut, ditched 10 m S of Malta but the problem is date as in A - B book is given as 3. 8. 43.

    Thanks Ross and Pavel

I've seen somewhere else that 458 borrowed aircraft from 172 so that fits and if NP537 didn't exist I'll go with this crew being in MP510.

    Many thanks

    Hi all,
Errol Martyn is his vol. 1 - page 89:
458 Sqn, RAAF (LG 91 [10 miles SSE of Markaz Amriya], Egypt; detachment at Luqa - 248 Wing, Malta Air Command). Weelington XII MP510 on anti-shipping patrol - took off at 2010 and came down into the Mediterranean, where it immediately sank.

    Henk,

With the following amendment in FYT Vol.3 (p.556):

p.89: PREBBLE, I D - take off time also recorded as 2110. Prebble, though an aircraft captain, was on this occasion acting as 2nd pilot, the captain being Flt Lt J L Taylor, RAF.

From a document held on the A705 for Sgt Clemow signed by W H Merton, Gp Capt, Commanding RAF Station Luqa:

Wellington Mk.XII MP510 of No.172 Squadron attached to No.458 Squadron took off from Luqa aerodrome ...

The crew is then listed in the order of:

    Taylor (458 Squadron)
    Prebble
    Whatnall
    Rowley
    Clemow
    Moynihan

This suggests being that only Taylor was of 458 Sqn.

I note that Prebble's service record shows him posted to 172 Sqn 13 Jan 43. Adjacent to that entry is '(2220) pending posting overseas. Draft overseas 13/4/43.'

172 Sqn was based in UK but at some point in 1943 had a detachment at Gibraltar.

    Errol
