    Default WAAF Casualties, Bristol

I have three WAAFs who died on 3/4 January 1941. I have just discovered that their deaths were as a result of enemy action on Bristol. Their deaths are recorded as at 13 Berkeley Square, Bristol.

A search of Google shows 13 Berkeley Square as Berkeley Square House an Employment and Recruitment Agency with no information other than lists of trading addresses.

Would anybody have any information as to what Berekeley House function was? Was it a Headquarters building or for WAAF accomodation?

    Grateful for any info

    Tony

    Hi Tony

Berkeley Square is literally 5 minutes walk from where I live. On that day a number of residential addresses in Berkeley Square were hit, as well as a YMCA hostel. About 15 were killed in Berkeley Square alone, though the casualties across Bristol were about 150 dead.

Number 13 itself also had 2 civilian casualties which makes me think that the WAAFs were probably billetted there, probably with a family.

    Thanks for your response

So in effect you are saying that Berkeley House is a residential property as opposed to the impression one gets from their Google presentation - a business property or a business run from a residential property?

It is probably a business address now (though they were almost all residential back in the 40s), using one of the old Georgian buildings. I know there are a number of business offices down there, as well as a hotel, but I just cannot remember which is number 13.

I'm going past the entrance to the Square in the next day or so and I will take a detour.

No 13 is not listed in 1947 Kelly's Directory so presume it was destroyed in the raid. In 1910 it was a doctor's residence.

    Thanks Dave

That appears to answer the question then, a residential property where they were billeted and destroyed in the air raid. So whatever is there now obviously has no relation to 1941.

    Grateful

Google Earth view of No 13 as it is now. Perhaps restored to its original style.
