9-9-1943 4 (O)AFU Anson I MG355

Hello,

On 9-9-1943, 4 (O)AFU Anson I MG355 forced-landed at Auchendolly Farm, Kirkcudbright. One of the occupants was AUS410443 Sgt Norman BRAND RAAF, who was slightly injured.

Any additional detail would be most welcome.

AC2 (WOp/Ag u/t) John WHITE - 1755207; perhaps place of death registration might have a link.

White was registered in Caernarvon together with Fg Off Harold Stevens

Thanks Malcolm. This means that WHITE must have been killed on Anson LV152 (Hit quarry cable leading to a jetty, Trevor Point, Wales).

F1180 for LV152 has 3 killed, 3 injured.

Pilot P/O H Stephens (sic) killed.

Hi Col,

The F1180 for MG355 has

Pilot: P/O E C Pye 130666 - Injured.

No fatalities, 2 injured.

Pilot unable to make airfield force landed, aircraft struck stone wall and caught fire.

Stbd engine cut, aircraft would not maintain height on one engine so pilot ordered crew to jump. One did safely but others preferred to crash land.

Thanks for the extra detail.

F/Sgt Norman Brand RAAF, was lost on 23/24-7-1944 when No.102 Sqn Halifax III MZ298 failed to return from Les Hauts Buissons. The F/S R B Seth RAAF, mentioned in BCL5/347, is actually AUS437061 F/Sgt Robert Budd SELTH RAAF. He was blown out of MZ298 when it exploded, his parachute opened seconds before he hit the sea. Selth was picked by a destroyer and ended up in Swanborough Manor Hospital, near Lewes.

For LV172, the page 361 of the death register includes, ATC Cadet Ronald A Cashen, 1340 Squadron ATC age 17

Also there is a 8th September death, LAC Edward E Elkington AG U/T age 20

Stevens aged 33 is on the same page with a 66 year old death.

The FreeBMB database has some error in it in that it has the wrong register volume for White, 10b instead of 11b, hence he does not appear in a page search of Caernarvon 11b 361

So we have then H Stevens, J White and R A Cashen perhaps, and did somethign else cause the death of Elkington the previous day?

Elkington was the sole fatality on an Anson crash.
