    Hi All

    I'm just trying to tie up some loose ends can anyone help?

    SAUNDERS, FREDERICK JAMES WILLIAM (J/4426) RCAF - age 21 according to TSGNO he was in Beaufort T6520 but this was a Tiger Moth - what was the actual serial?

    CROWHURST, ROBERT FREDERICK JAMES (1383688) RAFVR - age 17 - he was killed in Harvard 2724 - what were the circumstances?

    MAY, THOMAS IRVING (R/60219) RCAF - age 21 - according to TSGNO he was in Hampden AD750 of 408 Sqn which crashed at Manston on 22 Jan, but this aicraft was lost in Feb 1941 with 106 Sqn (according to A-B) - what aircraft was he in?

    CAMPBELL, RONALD FAWCETT (R/81267) RCAF - age 27 according to TSGNO he was killed on 30 Jan in Hudson, V9109, but according to A-B this aircraft was lost in similar circumstances on 29 Jun 1941, is A-B incorrect?

    V9109 was lost on 30th.

    Took off in company with four aircraft of the squadron but was forced to ditch off Lowestoft in position HLFE 4748, at 06:55 hrs. Sgt Hart rests in Grays Old Cemetery, Thurrock, Essex, Sgt Garrett in Dalry Cemetery, Ayrshire, Sgt Campbell, of Campbellton, New Brunswick, in Caister Cemetery, Great Yarmouth, while Sgt Harrop is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

    JANUARY 30TH - 1ST FEBRUARY. SHERINGHAM,
    NORFOLK. An aeroplane had been reported down in the sea, and with the help of fifty soldiers the motor life-boat Foresters Centenary was launched at 12.6 P.M. A light S.W. wind was blowing, with a slight swell. Later a fishing boat was sent out to give fresh information to the lifeboat and to help in the search. An aeroplane was also sent out. The aeroplane was found off Weybourne by the fishing boat as she was returning at 4.15 P.M. The life-boat continued the search for the airmen, but found nothing, and returned at 7.40 P.M. Two days later the life-boat was asked to go and and see if the aeroplane could he salved. She put out at 12.25 P.M., with men from Weybourne Camp on board, accompanied by a fishing boat. Nothing could bc seen at the place where the aeroplane had sunk, which was marked by a float, but using a wire sweep the life-boat and the fishing boat found what was thought to be the engine. Then, on the beach at Salthouses, a mile away, the life-boatmen saw the greater part of the aeroplane, without the engine. It was pulled out to the life-boat which brought it back to Sheringham, arriving at 5 P.M. - Rewards : First, service, life-boat 36, shore boat, f16 19s. : second service, life-boat, 24 6s. 9d., shore boat, 7 2s. 6d.

    Re: R/60219 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Thomas Irving MAY RCAF.

    On 22-1-1942, No.408 Sqn. RCAF Hampden AE267, force-landed in a field adjacent to Waddington airfield in poor weather. No further details.

    Could May have been aboard AE267?

    There is nothing new in either the Hampden File or The Hampden and Hereford Crash Log.

    Col - May's death was definitely registered in Maidstone which fits with a landing at Manston and he's buried in Maidstone so I think we can rule out AE267 at Waddington

    I agree that a fatality in AE267's forced landing in January seems unlikely, as this aircraft was with 408 Squadron on their first mission, 11/12 March 1941.

    Gents,
    This is what I've on file:
    This was Hampden A"D"754 of 408 Sqn - 21/22-1-1942. Took off from Balderton, Nottinghamshire for a raid on Emden. The Hampden was badly damaged over Holland by enemy fighters, passed the North Sea on one engine and finally bellylanded on West Malling, Kent. Sgt (Pilot) James P. FARROW - NZ402136 was injured. F/Sgt (Nav) Thomas I. MAY - R/60219 badly injured in the attack and died 22-1-1942. Sgt (WOp/Ag) Victor R. BAKER - 1310106 was also badly injured in the attack and died 23-1-1942. Last of the crew, Sgt (WOp/Ag) MILWARD was also injured.
    Sgt FARROW awarded an immediate DFM (5-2-1942) with following citation:
    "One night in January 1942, this airman was the pilot of an aircraft which bombed Emden. The aircraft was subsequently attacked and badly damaged by fire from two enemy fighters. F/Sgt Farrow received a slight wound in the leg and the remaining members of the crew were seriously woun ded. In the face of the harassing, F/Sgt Farrow ordered the crew to abandon aircraft. Unaware that his message had not been received, as the intercommunication system had broken down, and believing himself to be alone in the aircraft, he finally evaded his attackers and set an approximate course for England. Flying a badly damaged aircraft, on a dark moonless night, and with no instruments to aid him, F/Sgt Farrow eventually reached this country where he made a safe landing with the undercarriage retracted. By this skill and resolution, he saved both his aircraft and, unknowingly, his wounded crew. This airman has participated in many operational missions and had always shown courage and tenacity worthy of high praise".
    He survived again 22-1-1943 an accident (injured) with Wellington X3307 and again 27-6-1944 (injured and PoW) with Mosquito MM139. His brother James Ralph Farrow was killed 26-6-1942 on Lancaster R5620.
