    Default October 1942

    Hi All

Can anyone help with these queries?

    1. 5 Oct - AUSTIN, CHARLES WENDELL (R/82683) RCAF - age 20 – according to TSGNO he and four others failed to return in a Wellington of No 156 Sqn but Chorley only lists X3811 and BK203 as being lost that night with only one fatality between them, Sgt Chiddick. Anyone know the circumstances of his death?

    2. PHILLIPS, HOWARD JAMES (89404) RAFVR - age 24 – he was killed on 28 Oct flying either Spitfire VC, BR583 or EP643 of No 145 Sqn, anyone know which one?

    3. On 31 Oct Lancaster I, W4239 of No 97 Sqn crashed near Woodhall Spa, Chorley doesn’t mention any fatalities but Storr states the undermentioned were indeed killed in this incident: -
    FRANCIS, DONALD (1315446) RAFVR - age 21
MATTHAMS, RONALD GEORGE (400416) RAAF - age 26

    Can anyone confirm?

    All the best

    Malcolm

I have BR583 a VC (Tropical version) showing as spinning into ground nr El Daba on 27/10/42. This aircraft was delivered to 145 on the 16/07/1942.

I have EP643 Vb as being delivered to 'Middle East' no ref to 145 on the 02/10/1942.Presumed shot down by BF109 on 30/10/1942.

Thus my money would be on BR583.

    Hope this helps

"Severe electrical storms encountered over England and the Channel and a/c was struck by lightning over English Coast at 2045 hrs port engine stopped, flares jettisoned and course set for base but a/c could not maintain height. Approaching French Coast at 4500 ft a/c was engaged by intense and accurate flak. A/c immediatelt lost more height and crew bailed out, but captain found he could maintain height and flew back and belly landed at Manston".

    Colin, Malcolm,
Not so sure for BR583 because this was a Vc(T) and 145 Sqn only had the Va and Vb assigned. Furthermore BR583 was lost was lost "24".10.42 with 601 Sqn.
Air Britain in EA100-EZ999 (latest edition) has for EP643: 145 Sqn - Missing, pres. shot down by Bf 109, near El Alamein, 28.10.42.
Also have following note on file re F/Lt PHILLIPS (who hailed from Canada):
Two Spitfires of 145 Sqn flew a "free-lance" patrol over Daba at 07.10h. Seeing two Bf 109s over Alamein. Sgt Anderson attacked one which made off but F/O Phillips failed to return.
    Regards,
    Henk.
