Default RCAF personnel serving with 617 Squadron

    Dear all,

While finding full names of RAAF personnel at the NAA site and RNZAF personnel being updated with the tremendous help of Erol Martin, I'm looking for a way to find full names of RCAF personnel. I managed to find several on the RAF honours and awards site, but it seems there's not something such like a nominal roll. Also, the London Gazette is not of much help and only seems to list promotions and full names of RAF members.

I'm looking for the first names of RCAF personnel who served with 617 Squadron during 1944-1945:

P/O Dry, William J., J/88794 RCAF, rear gunner
    F/Lt English, F. L., J/17159 RCAF, rear gunner
    F/O Geller, L. Harry, J/19910 RCAF, navigator
    P/O Jennison, J. K., J/86849 RCAF, mid upper gunner
    F/Sgt Kohl, H., R/194461 RCAF, navigator
P/O McLennan, Douglas H., J/87492 RCAF, bomb aimer
    F/O Pindler, R. Floyd, J/22426 RCAF, navigator
    F/Lt Price, G. R., J/19531 RCAF, pilot
    P/O Short, H. R., J/86059 RCAF, flight engineer

Hopefully someone has these first names on file or, better, may point me in the right direction to a useful site to check.

    Best regards,
    Hans Nauta

Default RCAF personnel serving with 617 Squadron

    Hi Hans,

Barring anyone coming up with a nominal roll or squadron roster which answers your question(s) I would recommend you send this information to Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, attention of the Personnel Records Unit and advise them that you are looking for these men's first and middle names.

You do not require proof of death plus 20 to obtain their names, especially when you have a first name for four of them and all their service numbers.

It's if/when you start asking for their service histories that you will be asked for proof of death.

In 2006 I gave them a list of last names, most with one initial and no service numbers and in return they gave me the man's full name, date and place of enlistment, theatres served in and date and place of demobilization. Once I received that I could then begin tracing them to see if they had indeed passed away for the required 20 years.

    Regards,

    Dave

Hans -- replying to this old post.
Price's first name was Gordon. I've just written a post about him, which includes a photograph: https://dambustersblog.com/2020/12/1...rice-and-crew/
Kohl was in his crew, but I don't have his first name.

    Hello Chas,

Thank you very much for taking time to reply on a very old post. His first names were still unknown to me, so after all this years this query has finally been solved!

    Kind regards,
    Hans

    Hello Richard,

Thank you so much for these additions and also corrections in names/service numbers. The latter being a reason why I couldn't find any match in the usual sources!

    Kind regards,
    Hans
