    Hi Alex,

    47392 F/Lt George LAURENCE DFC, lost 9-11-1941?????

Firstly; 518381 Sgt LAURENCE, George. 141 Sqn. DFM. 30-5-1941 (Citation p.3097)

    7-1-1944*
    No.219 Sqn
    Beaufighter - ? -

Took off for a test flight. Port wingtip struck hood of car and aircraft somersaulted and crashed.

47392 F/Lt (Pilot) George LAURENCE DFM RAF +
746805 W/O (R/O.) Wilfred Thomas CHARD RAF - Badly Injured
    - ? - - ? - (Pupil R/O. U/T.) - - ? - - Survived

Laurence buried Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia.

    See: Those Other Eagles/Shores p.341

    All the above needs confirmation.

    * Most BoB references give Laurence's date of death as 9-11-1944! His headstone in Massicault War Cemetery clearly shows 7-1-1944. Unfortunately, it also shows him as a recipient of a DFC (likewise CWGC). Chard died on 17-5-1947. He is buried in Southend-On-Sea (Sutton Road) Cemetery, Essex. Plot T. Grave 16795.

Nothing in Carter for A DFC. Tevender has his Immediate DFM award. London Gazette gives his appointment to P/O from F/Sgt. 13/1/1942 pp232 then corrects it to F/O later. F/O to F/L 30/4/1943 pp1938.

    Hi Col, John

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

I took the reference for his loss from a BoB site. Typo on the year my fault. I did check the CWGC for his other details but didn't double check the date. Poor research on my part, I should know better.

    Alex,

I wouldn't be to perturbed about it. The late Francis Mason, and Kenneth Wynn both got the date wrong, so you're in pretty illustrious company. Getting it corrected is the important thing.
