    Default Harrier collision

    Hi,

I am having difficulty in confirming the date of a collision over the Otterburn Ranges between XV790 & XZ136.

    Pilots:
Lt John Carver (US Navy exchange) XZ136

    F/Lt. David Robin Sunderland XV790

D Waltons book places this as 02/11/1987

GRO places D R Sunderland as Sept 1988

Can anyone provide the correct date & srvice numbers please

    regards

    Chris

    Chris,

Colin Cummings 'Category Five - a catalogue of RAF Aircraft Losses 1954 to 2009' records both men as lost in a mid-air collision on 2 Nov 87. However, he has the aircraft serials in reverse order to you (i.e.XV790 is Carver & XZ136 is Sunderland).

The General Register Office (GRO) index is just that, its the index to registrations of deaths, births marriages and does not reflect exactly when the event took place. The late registration probably only reflects an inquest being held and the deaths reaching the civilian world a year later.

both men are listed for Sep 188 in Northumberland North Second district
    John Robert Carver age 32
    David Robin Sunderland age 30
Both in Volume 1 page pg1760

Chris, google the aircraft serial numbers and you will get the results presented above, its not some secret weblink.

Sunderland is FAA so his details are available on the Armed Forces Memorial
    http://www.veterans-uk.info/afm2/index.php

    Sunderland 5203624D

Search for him on th site above.

Carver is US military so at that stage his service number is his Social Security number:
There are many search engines out there for these:
    sample: http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

    Name: John Carver
    SSN: 391-56-0731
    Born: 5 Apr 1956
Last Benefit: 53217 Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America
    Died: Nov 1987
State (Year) SSN issued: Wisconsin (1967)

It possible that he married only in 1986 in Milwaukee.

I tried it...works. Don't use search on it, cut and paste. Same one through firefox.
