Default Sgt. (Obs) Wilf Kup (1309292)

I'm trying to get some info on the circumstances of the death of Wilfrid Anthony Kup who served at a time in Bomber Command with my Father-in-Law, Sam Craig. According to CWGC Wilf died on 5 August 1942 while serving with the RAF Volunteer Reserve and is buried in Stonefell Cemetery, Harrogate. His Squadron is not listed.

Flight of October 8th, 1942 merely records him as being killed in action.

    Hello,

I don't see him listed in Bill Chorley's Bomber Command Roll of Honour. Even in OTU or HCU he would have been listed in the casualties.

He may have served in Bomber Command before, but was serving in another command at the time of his death, may be ?

Henk Welting may have this in his files. Have you searched the board to see if Wilf Kup's name has already been investigated here ?

    Joss

PS : I checked the correct year, but was probably in a wrong Air Force, as I found it on page 116, but too late...

    Gerry,
Chorley has him serving with 1653 Conversion Unit.
He was killed in a Liberator, along with the rest of the crew when an elevator failed whilst banking, on a training flight, possibly fighter affiliation.
They had taken off at 1714 from Marston Moor.
Your man was a Bachelor of Arts (Oxford) Graduate.
That's all I can find, hope it's useful.
    Bill.

    Bill,

Many thanks - that's great. Is that recorded in the Bomber Command Losses for 1942 or in different Volume? I only have 1939-40 and 1941 Volumes so far.

    Best wishes,

    Gerry

The forums seaerch engine treats Kup as a word thats too short to search for!!

One would have to use google: kup site:rafcommands.com

    Gerry,
As Col says, the details are in Chorley's Volume 8.(HCU,s). His name also is listed in Volume 9 (Roll of Honour) on page 116.
There is no entry in BCL Volume 3 (1942).
    Bill.

You guys are just amazing! I've had a look at the link suggested by Col Bruggy and have taken note of Dennis' search tip for the future!

    Many thanks, another mystery solved!

    Regards,

    Gerry
