    Default RAF Liberator Squadrons

    Hi all,

would be possible to find out the exact number of RAF Squadrons using B-24 Liberators in WWII or at least RAF CC Squadrons?

According to list of CC Squadrons on this site I found 18 (including one RCAF). Is it correct?

    TIA

    You probably know --
In the Foggia air bases, Italy, 104 sqdn RAF converted from Wellingtons to Liberators early 1945 & 178 RAF flew Liberators [as well as 31 & 34 SAAF as part of the 205 group RAF 1944 ]

    Default RAF Libs

    Hi Pavel

223 Sqn (100 Group) used Liberators in the 'Special Duties' (RCM) role from Norfolk.

The books will tell you that they also used B-17 Fortresses too. That's just about true but they were converting across right at the very end of the war and only flew about 10 or 12 individual 'wartime' Fortress sorties (I looked it up once in their ORB), in the last few days before the war ended so I tend to discount them as a wartime Fortress squadron.

You can find a service history of each individual airframe, and the flying units (not just squadrons) that they flew with, in Air Britain's Liberator in RAF and Commonwealth Service.

Adding RCAF Squadrons to the mix:

    In Canada:
10 (BR) Squadron, III, V and G.R.VI, 1943 to end of war
11 (BR) Squadron, III, V and G.R. VI, 1943 to end of war
168 (HT) Squadron, August 1944 to April 1946
12/412 (T) Squadron, immediate post war
No. 5 OTU, 1944 to end of war
plus a few smaller units, including the T&DE and EAC Met Flight

    In the UK:
    422 (T) Squadron, from August 1945
    423 (T) Squadron, from August 1945
    426 (T) Squadron, from August 1945

    Oggie,

I believe KL645 was a 356 Sqn aircraft lost over Thailand with a crew of eight on 23 Aug 45 but please can you post any further information as to how it and its crew were found and where?

Unfortunately, I can't follow the facebook link you have posted.

This enquiry is just for my general interest, so if info is not immediately available and simple to post here, please don't trouble.
