    Hello,

    Beaufighter was Mk.VIF V8619, not V8616.

Mosquito V6816 listed by Air Britain as 46 Sqn - damaged in accident 13-1-1941; no further details.
F.Sgt "S.G." IRWING and BROWN were on Mosquito V8619, shot down by Mosquito HK227 of 488 Sqn. Crashed Stowmarket, Suffolk.

    Henk.

    Henk,

    Two possibilities for "Hurricane" V6816 - 46 Sqn - 13-1-1941:

    Crashed at Lod Farm, Ancaster.
    86727 P/O Frederick Francis HARPER RAFVR +

    or...

    Crashed at Belton Park, Grantham.
748782 Sgt (Pilot) Kenneth Edgecombe MARKHAM RAFVR +

    Default Mosquito friendly fire

    Hi guys

Apologies for changing tack, but while on the subject of Mosquito shooting down Beaufighter, can anyone enlighten me regarding Wellington R1152 of 21 OTU shot down by Mosquito on 15-16 August 1943. The Wellington crashed near Blandford Forum in Dorset.

I'm seeking identity of Mosquito and crew.

    Cheers
    Brian

    Brian,

Can't help much with the Mosquito unit, but the pilot was a F/Sgt O'Connor.

There is an extract from the Court of Inquiry (p.32 of 55) in the A705 of AUS414483 Sgt Fenwick Moseley GILKESON RAAF, the pilot of Wellington IC R1152. It names F/Sgt O'Connor as the Mosquito pilot, and suggests he mistook the Wellington for a He 177!

It has been suggested to me in the past, that the unit might be No.256 Squadron. I'll leave that for others to decide. I had enough fun with the crew of the Wellington.

Bill Chorley, in BCL7/241, has misidentified two crew members in his crew matrix. Unfortunately, Alan Storr has followed suit.

    The two airmen are:

AUS421355 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Edward James MALMGREN RAAF - Baled out - (Later DFC)
AUS405650 F/Sgt (Nav.) Joseph Robert ROLLESTON RAAF - Baled out - Injured

There is more to be said on this, but let's see what others have to contribute.

    Col.
