    Default 541 Squadron

Two more queries arising from Ottaways 'RAF Benson'

It records for 19/3/45 the loss of 41394 BKL Fuge in Spitfire XI 'PC857'. (CWGC has his death recorded on the 20th). I thought that this spurious a/c might have been PR XIX RM635; but this is the next entry:

On the 21st the record shows the loss of NZ 424403 FP Adlam in RM635, after crashing at East Grinstead.

The History has it that RM635 was lost on a sortie to Hanover on the 20th.

Can anyone help sort this out please?

    regards

    Dave,

From my 'For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915 (Volume Twoi: Fates 1943-1998)':

    "Wed 21 Mar 1945

    COASTAL COMMAND
    Returning to base
541 Squadron, RAF (Benson, Oxfordshire - 106 Group)
Spitfire PR.XIX RM635 - undertook a photographic reconnaissance sortie over NW Germany the previous day and landed at Melsbroek, Belgium, to refuel. However, owing to failing light stayed overnight. Set out for base on the 21st, but after crossing the English coast crashed in unknown circumstances at East Grinstead, Sussex, at 0930. The pilot is buried at Brookwood.
Pilot: NZ424403 Flt Lt Frank Percival ADLAM, RNZAF - Age 29. 892hrs. 14 ops."

Serial and date were confirmed by AHB upon my checking with them prior to publication.

41394 BKL Fuge in Spitfire XI 'PC857'.

Maybe a typo/misread for PL856 which was lost on a mission to Luneburg on 19/20 March 1945
