    Hi Phill,

I did a search of the Spitfire production data and couldn't find any Spit Vb to match. I searched by date, by squadron and by Baker - nothing came up.

His file at the Australian National Archives is not yet digitized, so you could try requesting that too.

    Hello Phill,

Baker's aircraft was a presentation Spitfire.

    "C.W.S. - DEFIANT"

Presented in September 1940 by the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Manchester, with a donation of 5,000 pounds, Mk.Vb AB195 was not taken on charge at Brize Norton until 12 December 1941. It began its short fighting career with No,452 (R.A.A.F.) Sqn at Redhill on 28 December, and was engaged on sweeps and escort duties. On 4 January 1942 AB195 spun into the sea about half-a-mile south-west of Beachy Head during a canon [sic]*. Pilot Officer Allenby Leslie Baker 403159 RAAF aged 23 of Murwillumbah, New South Wales, is commemorated on Panel 111 on the Runnymede Memorial.

    * The missing phrase is "cannon test"

    See;
Gifts of War:Spitfires and other Presentation Aircraft in Two World Wars.
    Boot,Henry & Ray Sturtivant.
    Tonbridge:Air Britain(Historians),2005.
    p.118

P/O Baker had arrived at 452 Sqn., from 53 OTU, on 23-12-1941.

The entry for AB195 on the Spitfire site makes no mention of Baker and the date is different.

    AB195 Vb 2387 EA M45 FF 10-12-41 6MU 12-12-41 452S 28-12-41 Ditched during cannon test 1/2m SW of Beachy Head Sussex 4-12-42 SOC 24-1-43

    Hi,

    http://www.spitfires.ukf.net/p017.htm

    Is wrong!

    Check the following:

Yup, it must be wrong. I was just pointing out why it didn't come up in a search.

    Phill,

I neglected to mention in my previous posting, the fact that; whilst at 53 OTU, Llandow, P/O Baker had a close call on 29 October, 1941, in Spitfire Ia R7159 "KAMBA-MERU". Whilst carrying out aerobatics near Usk, his aircraft struck HT cables. Fortunately for him, he was able to return to base in the damaged Spitfire.
