Default F/O Neil Alexander Gray 93 Sq Anzio

    Hi All,

Posted this back in January, but still had no luck even with the Air Historical Branch, I am wondering if any new members who have perhaps joined since Jan may be able to shed some light on how this man died please? he is recorded as being with 93 Sq (Spitfires) and having been killed in action at Anzio Beach head on 12th April 1944. He is buried in the war cemetery there .
The squadron were based at Lago with Spitfire MK IXs flying fighter patrols.
Typical squadron Spit was MA serial with codes HN Eg. MA636 HN-N.

    Help as always greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Dave

    Hi Col,

Thanks for trying with this one,but looks like a Canadian airman was killed in MA623 and not Gray. Though it is Odd that date for this loss is the 16th See below:

Pilot Officer William Watson "Bill" Downer

    RCAF No.R132482; J86143 (Officer)

    * 30 07th 1922 Wybridge, Ontario
+ 16th 04th 1944, died in a Spitfire cockpit Mk.IX MA623 during the attempted landing at Luqa Airport, Malta. The airplane landed in the sea and the pilot's body was never found.

    Fighter pilot

    Units: 93 wing
    Used types: Spitfire Mk.IX
    Battlefield: Italy
    Victory: 5-0-2
In the period: October 1943 - March 1944
    Claimed type: Bf 109 (2) Fw 190 (3x)
    Honours: DFC (15 4th 1944)

    So mystery of Gray continues.

    Hello Again Col,

Jus checked `They Shall Grow Not Old` book and it has the Canadian Downer as being lost in Spitfire MA 643 Not `623` So looks like your possibility of `623` being the aircraft still stands, though obviously as this is listed as missing, either it was found or Gray`s body washed ashore somewhere.

Checked Air Britain file also on this one and MA623 is listed as being missing 12/4/44.

Thanks again for your help Col.

    Regards
    Dave

    Dave,

Respectfully, maybe you should have checked here first:

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8147

The other site you mention has simply repeated the incorrect entry for Downer in Aces High/Shore & Williams. pp.229-30.

    Hi Col,

Thanks for that link, it does clear things up re Downer.

I think I need the ORB for 93 Sq for 12/4/44 to confirm Gray being lost in MA623. Anyone going to NA in the near future?

MA623 does as you say seem a likely candidate.

    Regards
    Dave
