Default US pilots in RAF service

    Hi,

In October 1941 P/O N V Crabtree (107779), Sgt W A Lovell and Sgt R I Reed joined 263 Squadron from 55 OTU. These three pilots were Americans who had joined the RCAF, possibly in June 1940, and were shipped to the UK after training, arriving July-August 1941.

In September 1942 all three were honourably discharged from the RAF on taking up appointments with the US Army Air Force. Theys erved with the 94th Fighter Squadron on P38s at Ibsley. In November the 94th FS was sent to Tunisia.

A search of the internet reveals that 2/Lt William A Lovell (O-885238) was shot down and killed in combat with Bf109s and Fw190s on 11th January 1943. I found a website that deals with the 1st Fighter Group, to which the 94th FS was assigned. There is no mention of Crabtree and Reed.

Would anyone have any details of these two pilots and their subsequent careers with the USAAF?

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Hallo Alex,

Just had a quick look concerning Crabtree and Reed. Neither are mentioned at all in the index or squadron pilot rolls in AN ESCORT OF P-38s (The 1st Fighter Group in WW2) by John D. Mullins. Nor do they appear in Frank Olynyk's Victory List for the MTO, indicating they had no aerial victory claims in that theatre of operations.

Maybe they never left the UK ?

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.

    Hi,

Thanks to all that have replied.

Thanks to Jerry I now know that Reed was with 335th FS and was lost in action on 20th February 1944.

Now it seems that Crabtree has been tracked down as well.
