    Hello David, and Merry Christmas,

Thanks for the information on the fate of DV547. I had the same basic crew, but this site:

    http://anaspides.net/military/decorations_curr_raaf.html

supplied some duff gen. He misidentifies D St C Brown*, as D.S.T. Clair-Brown, and states that that the balance of the crew were all RAAF.

NZ41305 P/O (Pilot) Donald St Clair BROWN RNZAF
    1055635 F/Sgt ( - ? - ) J SMITH
    100057 P/O ( - ? - ) Geoffrey Walter ELY RAFVR
AUS400303 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Jeffrey Beal HOPKINSON RAAF
AUS404407 Sgt (Air Gnr.) James John CURR RAAF
115713 P/O (Air Gnr.) Rowland Richard BEATON RAFVR

    All injured.

    * He is obviously unaware of:

    http://www.sailing.org/news/26521.php

My main interest was AUS400303 Sgt Jeffrey Beal HOPKINSON RAAF. Hopkinson is misidentified by Norman Franks, in Forever Strong (p.239), as F/Gnr. Sgt J.B. Hopkins - Wounded. No.75 (N.Z.) Sqn Wellington III X9757 was hit by flak on an op to Berlin on 20/21-9-1941 and Hopkinson was wounded.

    Have a Good Day,

    Col.

    Col,

RNZAF records describe the New Zealander as:

    BROWN, Donald St Clair

His correct service number is NZ41305

    Errol,

Thanks for the correction. Will amend my records.

    Whilst I have your ear!

Have I discussed the following with you?

    http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2155125

Holbrook's parents are variously given as; Frederick Thomas Holbrook and Esther Margaret Holbrook, of Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. Another source quotes his Father as - Mr F Holbrook, 3 The Close, East Road. Chadwell Heath, Essex, and his next-of-kin as Mrs Holbrook, 2 Cherry Tree Cottages, Queens Lane, Bisley, Surrey. ?????

    Col,

The only New Zealand connection I've been able to find is that Esther Margaret Holbrook died on 11 Aug 1962 and is buried at Taita Old Monumental, Lower Hutt. No sign of marriage here in New Zealand or of husband or son being born being here - suspect that Frederick Thomas Holbrook is same as he whose birth is reg 2nd qtr of 1896 at Birmingham, England, While Reginald Thomas Holbrook may be same as Reginald T Holbrook whose birth is reg 4 qtr 1922 at Edminton, England.

    Hi Col,
Will add a bit of further info re Don St Clair Brown. He and my father started a footwear chain in the mid 1950's in Auckland called Deejays Shoes. After several years Dad went out on his own but he and Don remained in touch. Dad after semi retiring was asked back to help with the Deejays chain which has since ceased business. I always wondered how they first got together and your query has given me the answer, RNZAF WW2. It is a small world as I myself was involved with Sir Tom Clark (mentioned in Don's obituary) in a farming venture.
Seasons greetings to you and yours.

    Regards,
    Rob Jerram
