    Default F/O J T Olsen, J.85494, 411 Sqn, RCAF, 1944-45

Researching the operational history of Danish F/O Hans Martensen, J.44178, RCAF, I came across another pilot of possible Danish/Scandinavian descent, namely F/O J T Olsen, J.85494, who is posted to No. 411 Squadron from No. 83 GSU on 18 July 1944 until he is posted to B.P.C. on 6 April 1945.

I have not been able to trace him in the Canada Gazette.

Would anyone know more about this man?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards

    Default re JT Olsen

Yes he is of Danish decent, but first generation born in Canada. Shows up as a late entrant to the Sqn because of attached postings to various other Sqn's, he in fact went to England early and was operational in Oct 1941 with 411. Regardless of lack of link to Canada Gazette I can verify this as truth as I am here because of him.

    Regards

    Dave Olsen

No, but thank you for pointing me in his direction. I guess this is the man:

Flight Lieutenant O. P. Olson, DFC; born Auckland, 2 Sep 1920; student; joined RNZAF 2 Mar 1941; prisoner of war, 29 Dec 1944; killed in Tangiwai train accident, 24 Dec 1953.

Many Danes emigrated to New Zealand. There fore I have come across a number of Danish names in RNZAF, but only a few who were still Danish nationals when enlisting.

After nearly a decade I am reviving this thread which I found via a google search. The commissioning notice for J. T. Olsen is in Vol.78, No.28, pg.2829 of the Canada Gazette: R60368 WO1 John Thomas Olsen CAN(J85494) 6 Apr/44.

There was a Sgt. J. T. Olsen RCAF serving in 81 Sqn. in N. Africa in early 1943 (WiA on 9 May 43) and I am making the assumption that he is the same individual as above. Can anyone confirm this? I gather from his posting that Dave Olsen is a descendant.

    Regards,
    Tom

Thanks, John, for that information and also for correcting my interpretation of his NCO service number. Those darn Canadian Gazettes can be so hard to read!

    Tom
