According to the 269 Squadron Old Comrades Association - http://www.oca.269squadron.btinternet.co.uk/history/squadron_history/chronology/1936-1940.htm - Hudsons of 269 Squadron attacked the Scharnhorst on 22/06/1940, together with Beauforts of 442 Squadron. Obviously 442 sqdn = 42 Sqdn (or perhaps 224) but...
42 Squadron lost 3 Beauforts in an attack on the Scharnhorst on 21/06/1940. Two Hudsons of 224 Sqdn and one from 233 Sqdn also attacked the Scharnhorst on 21/06/1940. Does anyone know if these were three different attacks on two seperate days, or was the attack by 269 Sqdn also on 21/06/1940? Regards, Bart |

Bart,
Following link seems to indicate that the attack was on 21 June 1940: http://www.naval-history.net/xDKWW2-4006-19JUN03.htm Just scroll down to wanted date. Under 22 June 1940 no mentioning is made of another attack. Regards, Leendert |

Hello Leendert,
Thanks! Also under 21/06/1940 on Naval history.net: 'The German ships put into Stavanger Fjord. They departed the next day and arrived safely at Kiel on the 23rd. Battlecruiser SCHARNHORST was repairing at Kiel until 19 October 1940.' So I assume that even if 269 Sqdn had attacked on 22/06 they couldn't have attacked the Scharnhorst. Squadrons which did attack on the 21st were: 821 Squadron - three Swordfish 823 Squadron - three Swordfish (two lost) 42 Squadron - nine Beauforts (three lost); took off ca. 14.20 from Wick 204 Squadron - ? Sunderlands (one damaged) 224 Squadron - at least two Hudsons 233 Squadron - six Hudsons (one lost); took off ca. 12.45 Leuchars 269 Squadron - six Hudsons Ross McNeill states in Coastal Command losses, volume 1 (1939-1941) that the planes from 224 and 233 Sqdns were attacked by 'between 40 and 50 Me 110 and 109 fighters.' Which makes me wonder how it was possible that the RAF losses were so 'low' - given the number of German fighters. Regards, Bart Last edited by Bart FM Droog; 27th February 2008 at 12:48.
