Hello Henk,

Thank you for the info. In my records I have Sgt. R.D.Armour RAAF,buried Catania War Cem. on 30.04.43, in place of F/O. Outerbridge. Assuming that F/O. Outerbridge was in LB169, I wonder what aircraft Sgt. Armour was in?

Regards, Derek

Hi Derek and Henk,

According to this site I found herewith attached, it states that the aircrew buried in Ravenna war cemetery were from the same a/c.

Pls advise.

Regards

Kevin

Hello Kevin,

On the basis of the Australian War Graves Site it would appear that both Outerbridge and Armour were on the same aircraft. Unusual but apparently true. Many thanks.

Rgds, Derek

Dear Derek,

Does this mean that Wellington LB169 had a crew of 7?

Hello Kevin,

I have had another look at the Australian site regarding the airmen buried at Ravenna. The site says that all were from the same crew. This therefore cannot be the crew in which I am interested, as Henk says, Outerbridge is buried in Ravenna, Westman in Agira, possibly re-buried and three are on the Malta Memorial ie no known graves. There is a problem here that at the moment I cannot put my finger on.

As regards Wellington crew numbers, initially they flew with six. Pilot, Co-Pilot, Nav, WOP, FAG and RAG. Then the Co-Pilot was dropped making five. A lot of Wellingtons did away with the FAG, the Nav standing in as necessary, reducing the crew to four but then Bomb Aimers were introduced, increasing the crew to five again. For Wellingtons involved with anti-sub and anti-shipping some squadrons took on board an extra WOP to handle the radar but again with no FAG or BA. It rather depended on the preference of the individual squadron.

Rgds. Derek

Hello Henk,

AHB have replied as follows:-

F/O. Outerbridge was the pilot of Wellington MkVIII HX522 which took off from Luqa at approx. 20.20 hours on 24th March 1943, but failed to return to base. All the crew except F/O. Outerbridge returned safely to the UK at the end of hostilities. There is a note on the casualty card that states 'Information received from the Vatican through the War Office states that F/O Outerbridge died on 1st May 1943 whilst trying to escape and is buried at Rimini, Grave 160, Adriatic coast of Italy'

F/O. Outerbridge was re-consecrated to the Ravenna British Empire Cemetery.

The rest of the crew were F/O. G.Buchanan 2nd Pilot

F/O. G.W.F.Barnett, Instr.(Odd, he must have been the Nav.)

F/Sgt. D.J.Tunney RAAF W.Op/AG.

P/O. A.C.Main RAAF W.Op/AG

F/Sgt. J.C.O.Wilson RAAF W.Op/AG

At last this mystery is laid to rest.

Rgds, Derek
