Looking for RAF career background for the above. The only things I know about him is that he was a pilot with RAF Ferry Command based at Dorval, Quebec, over the period April to November 1942 and that he is not listed by the CWGC.

Thanks:

Robert

Robert,

According to the RAF Air Force List of Oct 40 his number was 32161 and at which time he was a Flt Lt (as of 5 Dec 39). He does not appear in the Oct 46 AFL. A search of the London Gazette should reveal more details about him.

Noted also, in Maton's 'Honour The Air Forces', that as a Wg Cdr he was awarded an OBE - LG ref 14 Jun 45, p2948 (Birthday Honours List).

Errol and Terry:

Thank you both - this forum never ceases to amaze me!

Errol: Does the reference to Ross explain why he received the OBE?

My interest in Ross is that he made a number of Fortress delivery flights to the UK, in fact more than any other captain I've been able to document.

Regards:

Robert

I should clarify that that was Fortresses destined for RAF Coastal Command.

Robert,

"Errol: Does the reference to Ross explain why he received the OBE?"

No, it is essentially an index of those to whom awards were made. Also, being one of hundreds of names in a Birthday Honours list there will be no citation in the LG. There may be a recommendation buried in the AIR records at National Archives at Kew...somewhere.

The OBE recommendation is almost certaintly in the National Archives (ex-PRO) AIR 2/9056.
