Hello,

I'm new to this, but I thought I'd ask if any of you could help me find any details of the plane my father was shot down in 1941.

His name was William Bryant Louch No. 907191 and all I can find from his RAF records is that he was in XV Squadron ( based at RAF Wyton ? ), and was an Air gunner/Radio operator, he was shot down on a raid to Hamburg ( I think ) on 30th June 1941 ( definite). He parachuted safety, but was captured and spent the rest of the war in various POW camps.

Prior to that he was in 11 OTU and then 58 Squadron ( from 6/4/1941 )

That's about it, so if any of you would have any information relating to him or the rest of the crew, ( especially if you could confirm exactly what aircraft it was ), I would be extremely grateful.

Best regards

Colin

hello,

quoting from W.R. CHORLEY Bomber Command Losses volume 2 (1941) page 77 :

The crew of your father was flying Short Stirling Mk I serial number N6016 coded LS-G. The rest of the crew were :

Sgt R.C. SMITH KIA

Sgt D. REES PoW

Sgt D.B. ANNESLEY RNZAF PoW

Sgt T.S. THORKILSEN PoW

Sgt W.B. LOUCH POW

Sgt L.B. McCARTHY RNZAF POW

F/Sgt R.S STORIE KIA

They took off from Wyton to bomb Hamburg and were shot down by a night fighter. The Stirling crashed at Ellerbak, 14 km NW of Hamburg. The two airmen who died are buried locally at Ohlsdorf. You can get more details from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission online registers.

For the PoW, if you are near The National Archives, Kew, London, you could pop up there and check their PoW questionnaire (in the WO344 series) as well as the Operations Record Books of the Squadrons your father served with.

Hope this helps

Joss

Dear Dick,

Thank you so much for all the information.

I will try to buy a copy of the book you mentioned, it would be very interested to know a little more about my Father's Squadron.

I managed to obtain from my local library the Martyn R Ford-Jones book "Men who flew with XV", but although it had some very interesting details and accounts, I couldn't see any mention of losses on the 30th June.

Again many thanks for all your help.

Best regards

Colin

Hi there,

For what it's worth,a quick check through Bomber Commands losses and Luftwaffe nightfighter claims for 29/30 June 1941 shows that your father's aircraft might have fallen victim to Hptm.Walter Ehle of Stab II/NJG1,who claimed a Stirling shot down at either 02.15 or 02.45,depending on the source,at a location 2km N.W. of Ellerbeck (sic).

Hope this is of some use,

Regards, Mark.

Dear Errol,

Many thanks for the information, everyone has been very helpful, and we're certainly staring to get a much clear view of events.

Re any accounts from my Father of being shot down, I don't really have anything other than I believe he was shot in the leg whilst trying to evade capture after landing and ended up in hospital, before various POW camps for the rest of the war.

Best regards

Colin
