406 Sqn ORB + RAF Station Acklington ORB | G'day Chris Not quite sure if you have the following gen or not. The pilot was C1179 F/O Hugh John Findlay. His nickname was 'Jock' but his family called him 'Joke'. Findlay's Wireless Op/Air Gunner was R63911 Sergeant Edwin Karl Vickers The Beaufighter took off at 21:35 hours and was accompanied by another Beaufighter flown by P/O J. Robert Browning Firth. The two crew were conducting G.C.I. and airborne intercept exercises. Findlay's call-sign was Osram 21. Osram was the codeword of the day. Cambridge University Air Squadron | From the period 30 - 33, the Watson brothers from NZ. William Robert Browning Watson was a member from 30 - 33 amassing 106 hrs and 45 mins, but not qualifying for a flying badge as there was no night flying included. He served with the RNZAF during WW2 ending the war as a Sqn Ldr with a DFC (US), flying Venturas in the Pacific. Samuel Miles Mackenzie Watson was a member of the UAS in 32/33 amassing 150 hrs, but qualifying for his flying badge. He also flew in NZ with the pre-war Territorial Air Force. Flew with the RAFVR during WW2 in 75 Sqn. Killed on Air Operations on the night of 20/21 Jul 40 and subsequently awarded a posthumous m.i.d. P/O Arthur Osborne APPLEBY, R.C.A.F. | Hello everyone I'm looking for information about the above Pilot Officer, as well as a couple of his relatives. He was born in Morpeth in 1906, but emigrated to Montreal in 1929. On the outbreak of war he joined the R.C.A.F. The Morpeth Herald of October 31st 1941 reports that he visiting his home town, and was '[I]now in the Royal Canadian Air Force attached to the R.A.F.' [/I] Another report from 1947 states that he was now commissioned in the R.A.F., having returned from Canada. I'd be interested if anyone can supply any details - service number perhaps? Two of his brothers and a nephew were also in the R.A.F. His brother William Appleby, 42975, was killed on July 23rd 1940 in Hudson P5152 of 269 Sqn, which collided with Hurricane P2862 of 3 Squadron at Wick. Another brother, Robert Brown Appleby, 132571, was awarded an M.B.E. in January 1945 for [I]'his work as an R.A.F. transport officer just prior to D-Day.' [/I]Has anyone anything furtehr on his award? His nephew, Sydney Osborne Appleby, 1292707, was at ITW Torquay in 1940, sharing a room with 'Screwball' Buerling, trained at Perranporth in 1942, and was posted to 610 Sqn on October 2nd 1942, and then to 611 five days later. Robert BROWN DFC DFM | Looking for information on Robert BROWN, DFC DFM, (173108), RAFVR. His London Gazette entry for DFC, 8/12/1944:5635, lists him as previously being awarded the DFM, I've checked the London Gazette for previous entry's on his service number and found just one on 5/9/1944:4168, which gives his promotion from Pilot Officer to Flying Officer, he is listed without a DFM. Two DFM entries for Robert BROWN. Robert BROWN, (952445), 78Sqn. London Gazette 5/2/1943:651. Robert BROWN, (1034079), 100Sqn. London Gazette 12/11/1944:4973. Robert BROWN DFC DFM | Hello His D.F.M. was reported in the Bradford Observer of Feburary 6th 1943: [I]The D.F.M. is awarded to Flight-Sergeant Robert Brown, No. 78 Squadron, who was born in 1918 in Bradford, where his home is. He was a student before enlisting in 1940.[/I] The investiture was in November 1944, and there's a photo of him with his sister in the same newspaper of December 1st 1944. His address is given as 2, Tetley Place, Bradford. His D.F.C. award was reported in the Shipley Times and Express of December 13th 1944: [I]Bolton Man gains the D.F.C. Flying Officer Robert Brown, D.F.M., of Bolton, has now gained the D.F.C. He was educated at the Bradford Grammar School and later at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
