245 Squadron codes question | Hurricane Z3470 was indeed coded ?-DX (as viewed on the port side) and was being flown by F/O Brian Hawkins when he was shot down by flak over Brittany on 26 October 1941. This aircraft was captured largely intact by the Germans.
A question mark (?) was used as an extra individual code letter on a number of occasions and not just within 245 sqdn. 32 sqdn famously had a series of them including Spitfire IX MJ730.
I have also seen it applied to a Beaufighter.
