245 Squadron codes question | Combat Codes has the codes DX as being carried by Hurricane Mk.Is until 8.41, then by Mk.IIB until January 1943. It also has the codes MR being carried by by Hurricane Mk.IIB from 8.41 to 1.43, then by Typhoons. Fighter Squadrons of the RAF has only MR codes for Hurricane Mk.IIs, from 8.41, and there is nothing in the description of the unit's history to explain this anomaly.
Is the Hurricane a Mk.I or Mk.II? If the former, could it have been retained as a hack? Combat codes does quote Z3470 as a Mk.IIB with DX.? as codes. It is not clear to me what the ? is meant to imply, but it may be just that. ....Read More. | Graham Boak on 20th March 2012 01:04:04 |
245 Squadron codes question | Hurricane Z3470 was indeed coded ?-DX (as viewed on the port side) and was being flown by F/O Brian Hawkins when he was shot down by flak over Brittany on 26 October 1941. This aircraft was captured largely intact by the Germans.
A question mark (?) was used as an extra individual code letter on a number of occasions and not just within 245 sqdn. 32 sqdn famously had a series of them including Spitfire IX MJ730.
I have also seen it applied to a Beaufighter.
