Hi Henk
The following are registered at Sheppey(nearest a/f Eastchurch)
Brawley
Brett 23
Heayes 23
Hedges 20
Johns 18
Leonard 22
Munks 23
Williams 23
Wright 28
Brereton 25 and Jones 18 are registered at Maidstone and Casseley 39,Crote26, and Deeley 37 are registered at Hollingbourne. All are within range of Detling and could be air raid casualties perhaps taken off the station for treatment. Leder 42 and Mountstephen are both registered at Andover. I haven't had a chance to see if the two airfields were raided on this date which is the earlier stages of the B-o-B

Hi Henk
Just taking a couple of names from those you believe were involved in an Air raid at Detling,
I find Aspen,42 registered at Hollingbourne and S/Ldr Oliver,27 registered at Maidstone. This might place some of your A list at Detling as well as it is close to both

Dear friends,
What would my 'unaccounted listing' look like without your valuable help. Thank you so much for all this excellent info.

Hi Henk
Iv'e found a Denis Butler(no middle initial), age 20, registered at Andover. From the B-o-B Diary there was a morning raid on Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey and later in the day Detling and Canterbury, among others, were also raided, these are all locations where the Death Registrations of many of your "candidates" could have originated. I found to my surprise that 13/08/40 was what the Germans named as "Adler Tag", I had forgotten the significance of that

Firstly, Brian R6880 was definately a Spitfire and NOT a Hurricane

See also http://fishponds.org.uk/puckle.html

P/O (Pilot) Michael A. SIMS - 42364

Secondly

http://www.raf.mod.uk/Bob1940/august13.html

Aerodromes
It would appear from reports to hand that Detling suffered the most severely. Several buildings were hit - 8 Blenheims are reported to have been destroyed and the casualties are said to be 10 killed and more than 40 injured.

Andover was also attacked at 1700 hours on the 13th when approximately 12 bombs were dropped. Headquarters offices and officer's quarters were extensively damaged. One aircraft also damaged. The casualties are reported to be 2 killed and 1 injured.

Eastchurch
A heavy scale attack was reported and approximately 12 large craters and 6 small ones were made on the aerodrome. Aircraft at dispersal points were undamaged.

Further reports will be issued as and when details are to hand.

Casualties on Ground by Enemy Action:
To RAF Personnel - 12 killed, 41 injured.
To others - 23 killed, 177 injured.

Andover appears to be Butler and/or Leder and/or Mountstephen - Though I note 2 Killed plus 1 injured = 3

Detling/Eastchurch for what Dick has already posted..

Thanks Paul for your help. My 'unaccounted' list has many names for the next days in August 1940 and it seems that casualties were from Croydon and Driffield. Will name them all in threads to come.

Of associated, but not direct, interest is that F/O Harold Aspen, killed at Detling on this date, had previously served in the RFC, and had survived the ditching of H-P 0/400 J2259 in the Irish Sea on December the 17th 1920. Allegedly being operated by 100 Squadron at the time of the ditching, Aspen was flying as the Wireless Operator. After the ditching and subsequent recovery of all the crew by a civilian steamer, all of the crew remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind their flight and where they were going. 100 Squadron were based at Baldonnel at the time.
