I am sure there is a thread about this on here somewhere but I am blowed if I can find it.

I have been in touch with the National Archives about progress on digitising the ORBs in AIR 27. I have been told today that the task of scanning all the images is complete and the task of "transcription" is underway. However the digitised records will not be made available to the public until the whole project is complete and the broad target is for that to be achived by early to mid 2012.

Hi Steve,

Do you know if this is going back and scanning the actual pages, or if this is simply digitising the existing microfilm? Some of the microfilmed pages are challenging to interpret, especially those handwritten in pencil or made with anaemic war-strength typewriter ribbons and carbon paper!

Jeff

Sorry it was not a question I specifically asked but I believe it has been discussed here before and established that they have not gone back to the original paper documents they are woeking from the microfilm. I assume that there can be a measure of enhancing in the scanning and transcription process but as you say some of the microfilm images are indecipherable.

For what it is worth I have paper prints of some of the combat reports made from the microfilm and I have looked at the same document after it was digitised and in my view the images I have compared are considerably improved - much more intense contrast in b&w tones.
