AIR 27/1450: 237 Sqn ORB 1940-1943

I have just received an record copying estimate for the above reference from NA stating that

"Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to locate the requested material within the specified document."

Does anyone if this means that the material does not exist any longer, or is it just a case of misplacement or the like?

Having had this sort of thing happen to me at NZ National Archives (officially "Archives NZ" these days) I would think that it has been misplaced, which COULD indicate that it has been stolen (unlikely) or more likely has been, as I think you already suspect, misplaced. This could mean that it MAY be rediscovered several years in the future (I assume that periodically or on an ongoing basis, all archives are routinally scanned physically to locate mis-filed items), but if they are in the wrong cover it might take a very long time to come to light. So the very best of luck! You could inquire again in a year or two and see if it has re-emerged.
