Somebody (I have forgotten who) has an interest in Air Training Corps awards, and I herewith post the latest findings for New Year 1946 Honours List:

Flight Lieutenant Barwood has commanded No.630 (Huddersfield College) Squadron since its formation early in 1941. He is Headmaster of Huddersfield College and from the beginning he has spared no effort to keep himself up-to-date with Air Training Corps matters. The outstanding keenness displayed by the cadets and the standard of efficiency achieved by the Squadron have been the direct reflection of Flight Lieutenant Barwood’s fine qualities of leadership, resourcefulness and enthusiasm.

Squadron Leader Burns was appointed to a commission in the A.D.C.C. at its inception. He assumed command of the Liverpool Wing, Air Training Corps in June 1941and was made District Inspecting Officer for Liverpool School Units in July 1942. Throughout, he has proved himself to be a most energetic Commanding Officer and District Inspector of exceptional powers of leadership and initiative. Squadron Leader Burns has been particularly successful in obtaining and maintaining many valuable contacts.

Squadron Leader Chittleburgh joined the Air Training Corps in April 1941, and before being made District Inspecting Officer for Ipswich he commanded No.262 Squadron. An extremely enthusiastic officer, he has taken a great interest in every activity of the Air Training Corps and has always shown himself ready to undertake any task, at however short a notice. Owing to increasing business and domestic demands Squadron Leader Chittleburgh has now had to give up his service with the Air Training Corps.

Squadron Leader Enoch has served in the Air Training Corps since February 1941, and has held the posts of Commanding Officer of the Colchester Wing and District Inspecting Officer for North East Sussex as well as head of the Technical Institute. He has been responsible for the formation of the two squadrons in Colchester and for the formation of squadrons of squadrons in both Clevedon and Harwich in addition to flights in Brightlingsea and Kelvedon. At all times a loyal and conscientious officer, Squadron Leader Enoch has put in a tremendous amount of work not only in the Air Training Corps but also in other activities in connection with the war effort including considerable service with the Royal Observer Corps. He fought in the 1914-1918 War and is now 54 years of age.

Squadron Leader Foster held the post of Commanding Officer of No.1046 (Second Wolverhampton) Squadron from the formation of the Air Training Corps in February 1941, and was appointed District Staff Officer for Staffordshire and Shropshire very soon after the Regional System was introduced in October 1941. He is now employed as the District Staff Officer for Shropshire. The service he has rendered to the Air Training Corps has been most commendable. Squadron Leader Foster has always shown himself diligent in visiting the Squadrons and tactful in dealing with the problems of Committees and Officers. He has made excellent contacts with personnel of the Royal Air Force in connection with affiliation and camps for his Units and has always been ready to accept any duties on behalf of the Command even in his spare time of which he has devoted a large proportion to Air Training Corps activities.

Squadron Leader Hanna commanded No.1135 Squadron from March to December 1941, when he was posted to command the City of Belfast Wing. He continued to serve in this post until August 1943, when he was made the District Inspecting Officer for Country Antrim and County Derry, and later served as Sport Officer, Northern Ireland Command. Squadron Leader Hanna has carried out all his duties with great enthusiasm and much of the success of the Air Training Corps activities in which he has participated have been due to his outstanding personal efforts.

Flight Lieutenant Hercock has commanded No.119 (Sounthorpe) Squadron. He formed this squadron in the days of the A.D.C.C. and attended the first available course in 1941. It has been a difficult squadron to organise in view of the working of three shifts a day by the local steel industry from which most of the cadets have been drawn and it has only been this officer’s consistent enthusiasm that has kept the squadron routine functioning smoothly. Flight Lieutenant Harcock has always shown himself willing to co-operate in any County or Command activity and he has recently organised and carried out a most successful Non-Commissioned Officer’s course at RAF Station Kirton-on-Lindsey.

Squadron Leader Jackson joined the Air Training Corps in March 1941, and has been employed as District Inspecting Officer for North Middlesex. His work has been quite outstanding and not only has he given unstintingly of his time and energy to his own units but he has been ungrudging in his endeavours to further the work of the Command and of the whole Corps. His fine leadership, example and consistent good work have marked him as an exceptionally competent officer.

Squadron Leader Jepson was appointed to a commission in February 1941, and commanded No.174 (Second Manchester) Squadron until he was given the post of Staff Officer of the Manchester Wing. This indefatigable and enthusiastic officer has also been responsible for the training of the Wing School of Instruction while, as Chairman of the Command Sports Board, he has made a valuable contribution to the Command activities in the field of sport.

Squadron Leader Lampard was appointed to a commission in the Training Branch on the formation of the Air Training Corps in February 1941, and was given command of Leicester Wing on its formation in October 1941. He now holds the post of District Staff Officer for the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland. These various duties which Squadron Leader Lampard has undertaken for the Air Training Corps have been most efficiently and satisfactorily performed and his enthusiasm and energetic efforts have been remarkable.

Wing Commander Leitch was appointed to a commission in June 1941, and as Area Commander he has been responsible for raising the South West Area to a high state of efficiency with the resultant large percentage of proficient cadets. In addition to his continuous and conscientious work as Area Commander, Wing Commander Leitch has also acted as the Officer Commanding the Officer’s Training School when such courses have been held. He has devoted practically all his leisure time to the service of the Air Training Corps as well as all his working hours.

Wing Commander Lewis has served as District Inspecting Officer for East Glamorgan since 1941, and as Honorary Secretary of No.30F Squadron, A.D.C.C. and Cardiff Wing since 1937. His sound and constructive Committee work and the interest and enthusiasm he has maintained for Air Training Corps activities throughout the difficult period of the of the past twelve months have been specially commendable. Wing Commander Lewis has foregone many profitable interests in order to carry out his voluntary work with the Air Training Corps.

As Officer Commanding, London Command Schools, this Training Branch Officer has been on voluntary whole-time attachment to this Command Headquarters for nearly three years. Squadron Leader Sylvester has at all times displayed a high degree of tact, resource and energy in his work and has very successfully undertaken the development of Gliding Schools and all the staff work incidental to Royal Air Force liaison and summer camps.

Squadron Leader Umbers commanded a squadron from the formation of the Air Training Corps until February 1943, when he was appointed to the post of District Inspecting Officer. As District Inspecting Officer for Surrey, Squadron Leader Whittington has been responsible for the supervision of forty squadrons in addition to fourteen school units. Throughout his three years service with the Air Training Corps he has devoted an average of five nights a week to his duties and the zeal and tact with which he has dealt with civilian Committees has proved of great benefit to the units under his control. Many of these units were situated in an area particularly exposed to the danger of flying bombs during June to September 1944, and throughout this hazardous time Squadron Leader Whittington’s conduct was most praiseworthy. He made it his duty to visit those Units which had suffered most or were likely to suffer and it was largely due to his personal example that officers, instructors and cadets continued to parade in their usual numbers and that the continuance of training was practically unaffected by enemy attack.
