Hello everyone

Can anyone give an ID for a 27 Squadron Beaufighter lost on November 21st 1943, whilst attacking armoured cars between Kume Road and Thazi? Shores' volume three of the Bloody Shambles series lists the crew as Sgts Plummer and Collingwood.

CWGC has the following:
PLUMMER William Clive 1091873, 27 Sqn KIA 21st November 1943
COLLINGWOOD William 1379130, 27 Sqn KIA 23rd November 1943

I'm guessing these two are the crew, but why the discrepancy in the dates?

Regards

Simon

Hi. "Billy Boy" Plummer was my uncle. The family "story" was that the plane went missing and that uncle Billy was presumed dead, but now I have a location! When you say that Collingwood died of his injuries later, is that just a supposition or is there a way of finding out more?
Both men's names appear on the Singapore memorial rather than them being buried. I have a letter from the Red Cross promising my grandparents further information if it came to light. Either they never wrote again, or they did but the letter was destroyed - I'm afraid that my grandfather's grief was so intense that he never talked about his son again.
Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hello BabsLudbrook,

Welcome to the Forum.

l have the following on the loss of No.27 Sqn Beaufighter LX908:

The wreckage was seen by a fellow Beaufighter crew, burning fiercely on the ground. The last reported position was 20.21N.96.08E.

l can't explain the discrepancy in the dates of death.

Thank you, and for such a speedy reply, and for the co-ordinates.
It is wonderful to have found this out; wish it had been ten years ago so I could have told my mother.

So how did you find that witness account please? Is this something I have access to?
Babs.

Babs,

Here are my sources:

1/

Whilst attacking three armoured cars between Kume Road and Thazi, Sergeant Plummer's aircraft was hit, causing it to crash immediately and burst into flames, killing both of the crew, Sergeants Plummer and Collingwood.

On November 21 (1943), Sgts. Plummer and Collingwood were shot down in aircraft "J" during the attack on a railway south of Thazi. Their aircraft wreckage, burning fiercely, was spotted by another Beaufighter crew.
