The death has been announced of Wing Commander James DELL, O.B.E., at his home in Lytham-St.Annes, Lancs., aged 83, a widower.
After service in WW2 he was involved in flight training and test flying Hunters and Venoms.
Later joined the former English Electric Co., now BAe Systems, and was involved in the Lightning and Tornado projects of which he was Director of Flight Operations on his retirement.
In 1965 he was the first pilot to fly the TSR-2 (now that was an aircraft) and did so for a total of 20 occasions before it was controversially scrapped.
Haven't got a citation for his OBE but presumably it was for services to aviation.
