ASHWELL-COOKE, John Raymond, F/L (100112, RAFVR*) – Chief of Air Staff, Directorate of Operational Requirements- Member, Order of the British Empire - awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Air 2/9130, courtesy of Tom Thorne, has citation. The recommendation gave his rank as Wing Commander but the London Gazette gave his rank as Flight Lieutenant !

Wing Commander Ashwell-Cooke has rendered valuable service in connection with the development of military gliders and the evolution of gliding technique. He was transferred to the Royal Air Force from the Army Intelligence Corps in October 1940, in order that his special knowledge might be employed to the advantage in the building up of a British airborne force. He was attached to the Central Landing Establishment, Ringway, and later served at No.1 Glider Training School, Thame, and at No.296 (Glider) Squadron, Netheravon. In view of his exceptional knowledge and ability he was especially selected for his present appointment in this Directorate in April 1942, in which he has been responsible for defining air staff requirements for gliders, parachutes, tugs and troop carrying equipment. His duties have involved a close liaison with the War Office and with the Ministry of Aircraft Production and in 1944 included a visit to the U.S.A. which proved of great value both to the Royal Air Force and to the U.S. airborne forces. To all his activities, Wing Commader Ashwell-Cooke has brought a unique knowledge and experience of gliders and their operation which, combined with his great enthusiasm and well-balanced judgement, have very largely contributed to the high quality and readiness of the Royal Air Force aircraft and equipment on which the airborne forces have been trained and carried into battle.

As Women’s Auxiliary Air Force “G” Officer in charge of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Section at RAF Stations Stoke Orchard and Exeter since July 1944, Flight Officer Coulthard has rendered particularly meritorious service. She has devoted herself without thought of personal considerations, to the interests and welfare of the airwomen in her charge and by her example, personality and fine leadership she has built up a Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Section which is exceptional for its discipline, efficiency and contentment and which enjoys the fullest cooperation from the Royal Air Force. Flight Officer Coulthard’s consistent cheerfulness and good humour, coupled with her ability, have made her a great asset to this station.

This officer has been employed on traffic duties since this Station commenced operations and has at all times performed her work with outstanding success. Section Officer Hampson’s cheerful personality under all conditions has won the respect of all RAF and WAAF personnel in the Section and has been a splendid example to all.

KIDD, George, A/F/L, AFM (134591, RAFVR*) – Heavy Glider Training Unit, Maintenance Command - Member, Order of the British Empire – awarded as per London Gazette dated 1 January 1946. Air 2/9130, courtesy of Tom Thorne, has citation.

Flight Lieutenant Kidd has held the post of Engineer Officer at this Unit for almost ten years throughout which time he has performed his duties with exceptional zeal and has maintained a state of serviceability which has enable the squadron to operate under all circumstances. He was awarded the Air Force Medal for his services in the Royal Naval Air Service in the 1914-1918 War. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in the ranks in the 1939-1945 War and, after serving with a fighter squadron, he was appointed to a commission before being posted to this unit. Throughout his varied duties Flight Lieutenant Kidd has displayed consistent organising ability and devotion to duty. He has flown regularly on all test flights and has handled men most ably at all times.

This airwoman was the first Fitter II (Engines) Women’s Auxiliary Air Force to arrive at the unit and has been employed since August 1943 in the Repair and Inspection Squadron to the Servicing Wing on the major inspection and repair of aero engines. She is an outstanding fitter whose standard of work on Merlin and Hercules engines in particular has been exceedingly high. Her duties have involved working long hours in the open in all conditions of weather. She has taken a personal interest in the welfare of all the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force personnel on the station and has set a fine example at all times. Her efforts, energy and devotion to duty have contributed considerably to the output of serviceable aircraft from the squadrons, especially during the period of changeover from Whitley to Albermarle aircraft.

Since 1940 Squadron Leader Kiddier has been engaged on recruits training at various Recruit Centres. He has been in command of British recruits since July 1941 and has held the special appointment of Officer Commanding a Dutch Recuit’s Training Squadron at this Unit since March 1945. At all times this officer has applied himself diligently to his very exacting duties and through his example, devotion to duty and cheerful manner, he has obtained a 100 % output of work from all ranks under his command. In addition, he has won the appreciation of his superior officers by the valuable assistance and support he has always given them.

Flight Lieutenant Powner has been employed as a despatching and convoy briefing officer. He was posted to No.44 Group in July 1942 and was engaged on briefing and despatching duties until his posting to Royal Air Force Station Portwreath in April 1944, since which time he has been employed on despatching duties only. The sole despatching officer with only the assistance of a navigator, Flight Lieutenant Powner worked every day and alternate nights for a period of six weeks during the African fly out. He has displayed every care and consideration in despatching aircraft and during three years service he has dealt with all types of despatch squadrons, trunks and shuttle services, ferry, refors, convoys, etc. – in all approximately 3,700 aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Powner has continued to work with sustained enthusiasm and his considerable experience and reliable judgement have won the confidence and respect of all the transit crews with whom he has been associated.
