View Full Version : 1 RAF Hill Depot, Lower Topa (India) - role of this unit?

I am researching an airman, who is posted to the above unit from 28 Aug to 5 Sep 1943. I am curious about the role of this unit. From 62 Sqn ORB I get the impression that the men posted to Hill Depots during this period are posted for a period of relaxation.

In the National Archive record hierarchy, the Hill Depots are part of the Air Crew Holding Units' section. This could support my impression.

Does anybody know if my impression is right?

This wording would certainly support your theory:

Location in Reel 1 is No.1 RAF Hill Depot at Lower Topa in the Murree Hills in Punjab (now in Pakistan). Hill stations such as these were popular as resorts away from the oppressive heat of lower-lying areas during Indian summers.
