Sgt Maurice W. NEVILLE - 742656 - 61 Sqn (Hampdens - Hemswell, Lincs.) - missing and commemorated on Panel 17 of the Runnymede Memorial. His name is in Chorley's Vol.9.
Who has the 61 Sqn ORB and could inform me on what caused this airman's death ?

Regards and thanks for your help.
Henk.

Hampden P2082 (50/61 Sq Roll of Honour). Missing Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (Hampden File)

If you have any other odd losses for 50/61 Sq. if you pass them on hopefully the Roll of Honour will at least give us the aircraft.

John,
No Hampden loss 9/10 and 10/11-10-1940. Sgt Neville may have been shot off, accidentally baled out or seriously wounded and for medical treatment dropped off a 61 Sqn Hampden. Middlebrook's Bomber Command War Diaries:
9/10 October (Germany - France - Holland):
70 Battles, Hampdens and Wellingtons to many targets. One Wellington lost. The largest raid was by 20 Hampdens on the Krupps armament works in Essen but only 3 aircraft reached the target because of icing conditions. There were also 6 minelaying and 4 OTU sorties.
10/11 October (Germany - occupied countries):
157 Aircraft of all types to 13 targets in Germany, to the Channel ports, to Eindhoven airfield and minelaying. No losses.
I think only the 61 Sqn ORB may offer the solution, or the text of Harry Moyle's "Hampden File" (unfortunately not on my book-shelve; only copies of the appendixes.
Regards,
Henk.

............forgot to mention that Middlebrook has for:
11 October 1940:
6 Blenheims on an uneventful sea sweep, and for

11/12 October 1940 (Germany - France - Belgium):
86 Aircraft of all types to oil and shipbuilding targets in Germany, in minor raids to the Channel ports and minelaying. No losses.

Alex,
Further info on P/O Mallon here:
http://aircrewremembered.com/mallon-john-charles.html
It says he was captured wounded, dying of his injuries three days later. Of note is the reference to the CWGC having the date of his death incorrectly recorded as 8 October 1940 (as can be seen in the photo of his grave). The current CWGC entry now says he died on 11 October 1940, so presumably the head stone will now have been amended.
