Hi all

I am still on my search to find out as much as I can about 2 aircraft and the Squadrons my Grandfather flew with.

Can anybody please recommend any good reference books on Handley Page Halifax and Lancaster Bombers please? Basically as much facts and wartime info plus loads of photos would be superb !

I'm looking to buy Chris Goss - 'Its suicide but it's fun' about 102 Squadron. Can anyone recommend any good books about 150 Squadron, Nov 44-May 45 period at RAF Hemswell? I've got the Nightbombers DVD.

I've got some books from the library, Bomber Command Max Hastings, RAF Bomber Command at War Rupert Matthews, RAF Handbook 1939-1945 David Wragg, Lancaster The Biography Tony Iveson DFC and Battle of Britain Alex Woolf.

Any other recommendations, especially library available copies HUGELY appreciated ! ! !
Thank you
Sam

Hi Sam,
A few:-
The Halifax File by R.N Roberts/ Air Britain
Halifax Squadrons of WW2 by Jon Lake (preview available on google books)
Halifax at War by Brian Napier
Handley Page Halifax: From Hell to Victory and Beyond by K Merrick
From Hull, Hell and Halifax by Chris Blanchett

A couple of first hand accounts by Navigators on Halifaxes
Halifax Navigator by Basil Spiller
One Wing High by Harry Lomas

There is a photo on the Imperial War Museum website of F/Lt Carey, who was your grandad's pilot towards the end of his time at 102 Squadron, and his crew taken on 4/5 October 1943. Unfortunately it doesn't look like he was flying with him that night -although he had been the night before.

Thank you Pete
Ill look up those books online and in the library.
A member on another group has sent me the IWM photo but as you state my Grandfather wasn't flying that night. He flew on the 3rd and 14th October 1943.
Are you on Bombercrew.com forum? If yes I think you answered my post earlier. We have been in touch by email so if I need anything I'll drop you an email.
Best wishes

'Lancaster at War' volumes 1 to 5 are the best series.

Roberston's 'Lancaster story of a famous Bomber' is not bad either.

If you're still looking for a book on RAF Hemswell, try "Bomber Intelligence" by William E Jones [ still available from various sites ]. Jones was the intelligence officer there at the time you stated - he recalls the "Nightbombers" film being made. It, in my opinion, is one of the best books on Bomber Command ever written albeit by non aircrew.
