Has anyone any information on an RAF pilot G.L. Hiscox. I believe he crashed into the jungle in his Hurricane. He survived
fortunately. Don`t know his rank at the time (or the date) but ultimately he was Squadron Leader I understand.

Many thanks JeanB

Using Ross McNeil's wonderful search engine..at http://www.rafaircraftaccidents.com/Air_Force_List/afllistedition.php

Hiscox turns up the following in the 1945 RAF Lists.

Hallo again, and thanks for your help. Yes, I`m sure it is the right man. I am not related by the way. I would like to find out more about his crash in Burma ... probably 1944/45 ... I understood that he managed to walk out of the jungle, and turned up some while later. I do know that he suffered severe back injuries. I should also like to know what rank he held when he finally retired. There does not appear to be anything further in the Gazette after the Jan.46 entry you mention.

Any ideas where I could search?

Jean, i could not find him in the indexes for some of the books dealing with the Air Wars (Chris Shores, or Norman Franks). This sounds similar to Carmichael (http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?17042-Carmichael-Humphrey-Rawstone-MC-(Pilot-Officer-28-Squadron)-%96-POW-Escapee) i found Carmichael's mention in the indexes and other places on web. But none of teh books mention his escape.. so I wont be suprrised if Hiscox's story is also unknown.

Also it seems there are other Gazette entries that go beyond 1948/49..

The last link is for an entry from 1955 which shows his rank as Flt Lt and mentions something about him retaining his rank inspite of being medically unfit.

If he is not family, could you share as to what your direct interest with G L Hiscox is ? How did you come to hear about him? etc.

Thanks so much for the additional links with the Gazette.

As for my interest - well it is peripheral - as I said, I am not related to Geoff, but friends of mine were, and it was from them that I learned of his crash and subsequent jungle trek. I do know that he suffered a very severe back injury, which caused him serious problems throughout his life.

So I was simply interested to learn something of the events that took place. But it comes as no surprise to come up blank. It was after all a very eventful time, and many people must have had stories which remain untold.

Anyway, thanks again, and I send you all my best wishes.

Jean

Jagan .... Thanks so much - there is never any urgency about this sort of enquiry is there? I`m pleased that I now know what happened. Never ceases to amaze me how much collective knowledge resides in RAFCommands.

Curiosity satisfied. JeanB
