Some questions and comments. Notwithstanding the availability Flight on line, hard-copy Aeroplane magazines are a necessity in this work. Several deaths involve officers of the RAFO and some may be Flying Club accidents (not sure how to resolve this). "Died" in most cases probably means just that - non-operational death from disease, age (many are retired), surgery. Help with respect to serials and circumstances welcomed.

"TOSTEVIN, Osmond Cecil, Flight Sergeant (203773) - killed 10 December 1929 following collision of two Siskins, one belonging to Station Flight, Duxford and the other of No.19 (Fighter) Squadron."

A little more on this one Hugh.

Tostevin was actually one of the two pilots who comprised the Duxford Meteorological Flight at the time. The accident occurred at 10 am whilst he was making the morning ascent. The accident was reported in The Times the following day. Email me off-board if you would like a copy.

I've the ORB somewhere!

1928 some more serials

23 Jan Dauncey Seems unlikely that he was killed in the Turcock as this a/c was not lost until 13 Feb. However The Times report of his death mentions ‘a single seat Blackburn’. I have not been able to find anything about the Turcock crash in The Times so it is possible that there was no fatality involved .

Hello,

23/01/1928 - DAUNCEY - Date should read 13/02/1928. Blackburn F.1 Turcock G-EBVP (allotted civil registration for test flying and speed trials). " Blackburn's Turcock fighter arrived at Martlesham Heath for testing in a civilian guise, as this beautifully streamlined biplane had not met with success in getting a place in the R.A.F. However, its makers, not wishing to abandon this design, looked for a foreign buyer and received some encouragement from Turkey. As the previous design had been named Lincock, it followed that this machine became the Turcock. Whilst carrying out speed trials on 13th February, 1928, Flying Officer Dauncy [sic], passed over the measured mile in one direction, followed at a greater speed in the opposite way, and then followed by a much faster run from the eastern end of the course. Hitting a tree at the western end, the Turcock cartwheeled along the ground, the pilot being killed instantly."

1/ For the 1928 Hendon Air Display a new and effective demonstration was given by "diving past" the crowd in formation, the high pitched noise of the airscrew and Curtis [sic] engine at 220 m.p.h. sounding most impressive. In the following months the Squadron was much in demand for demonstrations to students at the Staff College, and to visiting V.I.P's. It was for the Sultan of Oman that the fastest and most impressive demonstration was given, but it seems it was overdone - because the tail fell off Flt. Lt. Somerville's [sic] aircraft, and he was killed, with his observer Cpl Loud.

Letter from Group Captain Albert Edward Dark in Aeroplane November 1994 . Suggests serial is incorrect he said he had a photo of J7946 in flight, with two Fox IA in close proximity. The other two Fox are J9028 and J7943 were not received by squadron until Feb 14, 1929 and March 1, 1929 respectively. He also flew J7946 on two separate dates: Sept 24 and 25, 1929 - '

Paul,

I preface anything I write with the caveat, that "Leads The Field", was printed in 1960 - nearly sixty years ago. It wasn't bad for its time, but it is now completely out of date.

"LTF", places Steanes in Fox J7944, and Frost in Fox J7942.

I did not have access to my file on the Fairey Fox when I wrote up the earlier posting. Having retrieved the file, I notice I had recorded G/C Dark's comments (AM/Nov,94, p.65). I also recorded a follow-up from the author of "LTF", T. Mason:

"Fox hunting"

Sir,

On October 11, 1928, a Fairey Fox of No.12 Squadron crashed at high speed into Hendon aerodrome, killing the pilot, Flt Lt W. E. Somerville [sic] and the gunner, Cpl Loud.

In 1960 I recorded this event in a history of No.12 Squadron, "Leads The Field", which was privately published, and, in an appendix, identified the aircraft as J7946. Now, some 66 years after the event, I learn that the aircraft was probably not J7946, as there is documentary and photographic evidence that this machine was flying at least well into 1929.

After some 34 years, I do not remember the source of the identification recorded in "Leads The Field" - but the information was probably taken from the squadron's official record, the Form 540 now held at the Public Record Office, Kew. Since 1960 at least, two other published works have given the number of the crashed aircraft as J7946.

The intriguing question is, if J7946 was not the aircraft involved, which was it? It seems that all the remaining Foxes are accounted for - either already struck off charge prior to October 1928, or flying after that date.

Can any of your readers shed light on this minor item of Royal Air Force history?

Fox hunting. (T.Mason).
Aeroplane Monthly. February, 1995. (Vol.23. No.2. No.262), p.47.

Unfortunately, there was no follow-up (that I could find), in "Skywriters"

I will have a look at the other queries later on - bit hectic at the moment.

Season's Greetings,

Col.

Thanks Interesting: had suspected that Steanes may have been in J7944 as it is apparent that Frost had hit him from behind and his tail was ripped off. His plane would have gone in vertical
J7942 was rebuilt so may have gone in with a "flatter" approach especially as his starboard upper mainplane sheared in half and he had some element of control before abandoning aircraft

J7944 collided with J7942 at 1000ft near Andover ""26"".7.26. Written off Charge 19.8.26 -

J7942 collided with J7944 at 1000ft near Andover ""26"".7.26. Makers rebuilt TOC -12 Sqn ? AVIA 6/6880 (1929) - Examination of engine mounting from Fairey Fox J7942 -

See the later AVIA date 1929 as well..

Also re: J7946 (F852) First flown 28.6.26, TOC 12 sqn 6.26

Coroners report says plane flown 302 hours and 18 Months old - So we would look for a build date around June / July 1927

I can't find a picture of wreckage especially tail which may provide more evidence

I think it might actually be J8423 (F875); FF 23.6.27; TOC 12 Sqdn "7.27 – 8.29" for Somerville/Loud instead of J7946

It is the only one of the 5 that were '18 Months Old' in October 1928 with no definite Fate

Also it was used as a Display Aircraft

BRADFORD, Ernest, Corporal (347098) - killed 10 May 1928 at Invergordon in a Southampton flying boat of No.480 (Coastal Reconnaissance) Flight. The pilot, F/L Alick Charles Stevens, sustained minor injuries.

The Scotsman - Friday 11 May 1928:
An accident occurred at an early hour yesterday morning to the flying boat S 1126, one of a flight of six attached to the Fleet stationed in the Cromarty firth. The flight was manoeuvring over the Firth, when S 1126 , with a crew of four men, proceeded to descend, and in doing so struck and broke the mast of the Royal Air Force auxiliary ship Adastral which acts as tender. The flying boat crashed in a nose-dive into the Firth, and immediately began to sink. Three of the four men on board extricated themselves and swam about until picked up by a motor boat, and were taken ashore to hospital, suffering chiefly from shock. The fourth man, Corporal Ernest Bradford, telegraphist, belonging to Worthing, was not seen, although a search was made. Subsequently, when the flying boat was towed to harbour, the body was found. Flight-Lieut. Alick Charles Stevens, the pilot, received minor injuries.

Paul,

Miller was a member of the 13th Entry, RAF Halton on 1 January, 1926. Died 26/11/1928? If so, he should be listed on the 1928 casualties thread.
