Hello

The Wing sick quarters, Wing 138, states : Cpl Couchman R.A.F.S.P. [?] fatally injured by a lorry on the main Cambrai-Douai road on the evening of the 19th of January. This makes the sixth fatal road accident since the arrival of the wing at Epinoy.

Have always wondered about R.A.F.S.P. ?

RAF SP almost certainly refers to the 'Snowdrops' - or, at least, it did so in my time!! And they always had a Cpl's tapes up, even if they were only substantive LACs.

Hello

Thanks Simon and Peter.

Peter, not all of us are English... Can you explain what the "snowdrops" are ? I imagine they are the Service Police, but I'd like to be sure.

Can anybody confirm that M.P. is U.S. ? and S.P. British ? I have no knowledge at all in this field.

TIA

Joss, sorry!
"Snowdrops" (after the winter/spring flower - white on top, green underneath!!) was the derogatory phrase used to describe the RAF Service Police (SP) on account of the fact that they wore white covers to their No 1 Service Dress caps when on duty (the UK Army Military Police (MP) were "Redcaps" because they wore red covers to their SD caps). The phrase 'MP' for Military Police may be used by many countries. Can't remember what the Navy "Shore Patrols" (ashore) or their Regulating Officers (afloat) wore!!

Hello

Thanks for enlighting me about this. I thought they were called MP wherever... Even in France...

It never occured to me that the Police in the R.A.F. was called this way. Learning all the time, and that's the greatest advantage of this board.
