JOHNSON 2227209 - 5 O.T.U.

He was killed in the crash of an RCAF fuel tanker which he and another RAF Sergeant had 'borrowed' on their way back from the Sergeants' Mess. The vehicle rolled into a ditch at Langley Prairie, and Johnson was killed outright, the other man being pinned underneath the vehicle. He was rescued by local residents.

WEDGWOOD, Robert Michael - Statutory Deaths on Scotland's People lists his death as "died due to war operations - aircraft crash" and the location as "in the sea off Lamberton". Lamberton is in Berwickshire.

The next entry is F/O Frank Ernest LARKMAN, J/42709 R.C.A.F., aged 20. Details for his death are the same.

Both lost in Beaufighter VIf KV976 of 54 O.T.U. - Larkman as (trainee?) Navigator, and Wedgwood as Instructor. Two other crew, both pilots, survived:

There are further details in "Dinghy Drop" by Tom Docherty, page 174.

Been looking for years.
Thank you so much.

Hi Merrille
i was reading the war diaries for Gioia earlier this week and came across a report about a plane that crashed shortly after the first 2 parachutist's had jumped.
I will have another look but i think it killed all the crew and occupants of the plane including Hugh Hayden (Raiding Support Regiment).

I have also just read the post below. http://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-555922.html

According to my records Hugh Hayden was on course number 25 which commenced around 28/10/1944 so i wonder why he was at Gioia 3/3/45? Maybe he was injured or sick on original course and had to go back . What ever happened it was very bad luck for all of them.
