John William Leslie Stopani 1370554 , and
1502115 LAC W. T. Wallace , were on guard duty at the D lines petrol storage depot on the Cervia to Castiglione Road which consisted of a mile long petrol dump. At 00:25 Hours , a vehicle approached whilst they were on a Bailey bridge at Map Ref M657193 , the vehicle stopped and they approached it and they questioned the occupants who said in Italian that they were going home.
Wallace got onto the rear of the vehicle and noticed there were 6 or 7 men in it, Stopani got onto the running board and told them to leave the area . After 200 yards , the occupants started to move and were told to keep still, one came to the tailgate and Wallace was shot in the right leg and fell off the vehicle, whilst scrambling off the road he heard 5 or 6 more shots and with difficulty crossed the salt marshes to Number 1 Guard Post where at 01:00 Hours he raised the alarm and a party was sent out.
Stopani was found at 02:30 Hours in a pool of blood with multiple bullet wounds in the chest and stomach, An investigation proved unable to gain sufficient evidence to prosecute although it was believed Italian co-belligerent paratroopers of the Folgore Division were responsible
