I am looking to see if anyone has a copy of Ian Tavender's book on the DFM. I am looking for the citation and any information for a DFM awarded to Sergeant Joseph F. S. Lawley in March 1941. Any help will be appreciated
Terry

Hello,

DFM Recommendation Details:

LAWLEY, Joseph Frank Stevenson. 564281 Sergeant, No.47 Sqn.
LG: 7/3/1941. Air Observer.

This airman has participated in over 20 operational missions over Eritrea and Abyssinia as Air Observer. He has always displayed the finest qualities of courage and endurance and has successfully navigated the formation over long distances in mountainous country. His aptitude for finding new targets despite unreliable maps and adverse weather has been most marked. On one occasion as Air Observer in the Leader's aircraft, he navigated a flight of 11 bombers to the heavily defended town of Danglia in Northern Abyssinia. He has played an important part in the successes obtained by his squadron.

See:Tavender/The DFM Register/II/K-Z. p.72.

Hello Col Bruggy
Do you have the citation for a Charles Wilce who was gazetted on June 3rd 1944 for the DFM? He was with 61 Squadron and had the service number 1815895.
Thanks
Terry

Terry,

Official Recommendation Details for F/Sgt Wilce's DFM:

WILCE, Charles. 1815895 Flight Sergeant, No.61 Sqn.
L.G. 30/6/1944. Sorties 30, Flying hours 204.40. Air Gunner. Air2/9015.

This N.C.O. has completed 28 successful operations as Air Gunner including 11 on Berlin. On the night of 22nd/23rd March, 1944, his aircraft was attacked by a fighter when approaching the target area in an attack on Frankfurt. His quick and decisive action enabled him to share in the positive destruction of the enemy aircraft with the rear gunner. At all times, he has proved himself to be courageous and the vigilant search he has maintained and good crew co-operation are largely responsible for the success of the sorties on which he has flown. He has proved himself cheerful and always willing to fly against the enemy with any Captain. For his steadfast courage and determination he is recommended for the non-immediate ward of the D.F.M.

28th April, 1944.

See: DFM/Tavender/II/K-Z/p.954.

Hi Col Bruggy
Again many thanks for the Wilce citation and for the Lawley auction information. His DFM was originally auctioned in 2006 by Spinks in London and I have been in touch with them for any information but so far have not received any. If you can email me on terry_evans@btinternet.com with your name I will add you to the acknowledgements in a book I am writing.
Many thanks
Terry

Hi Terry,

No need for any acknowledgement, simply a transcriber!
