POLISH AIRMEN KILLED
Fire Follows Mosquito Crash at Norwich
The Polish pilot and navigator of a Mosquito aircraft were killed when their machine crashed and caught fire in a field off the Reepham Road, Norwich, on Monday morning.
An R.A.F. rescue squad, smothered from head to foot in foam from fire-fighting apparatus, worked desperately to rescue the two men from the blazing aircraft. One was alive when extricated, but died shortly afterwards; the other was trapped beneath the engines and is believed to have been killed outright.
The pilot was R. Skubik and the navigator M. Mroz.
An eye-witness who was working in a nearby field said the aircraft appeared to touch the tops of the trees as it crossed the Reepham Road.
It crashed in a stubble field about 200 yards further on and immediately burst into flames.
R.A.F. firemen and ambulances rushed out from St. Faiths Aerodrome.
Company Officer Garrod was in charge of the party of N.F.S. men from Norwich who attended, and Divisional Officer Collow was also present.
