Robert Samuel Stuart Steward 171041 , entered a jewellers shop on Somerset Street Karachi and after he had selected certain saphire & opal stones , pulled out a 9mm automatic pistol and ordered the manager and shop assistant to turn their backs to him. He then struck the manager on the head with the pistol and ran into the street . The alarm was raised and he was pursued by a number of locals . After running some distance he was observed by the Assistant Provost Marshall of the Airborne Division who gave chase in his jeep.

Steward entered a narrow alleyway. The APM blocked the entrance with his jeep to prevent the locals following Steward and then chased him on foot. The alley was a dead end with 4 doors and as the doors were tried a single shor was heard behind one and Steward was found with a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head from which he died in hospital half an hour later
