AUSTRALIA.

408161 W/O Donald William BEATTIE RAAF.

AUS408161 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr) Donald William BEATTIE RAAF, was severely wounded in the head whilst on operations to Mainz, on 11/12-8-1942. His No.150 Squadron Wellington III X3744*, had been hit by flak and later was attacked by a nightfighter, killing the rear gunner (AUS406589 F/Sgt Paton BELL RAAF), and wounding Beattie, The Wellington made it back to Coltishall, where it crash-landed. Beattie slowly recovered from his wounds and was eventually repatriated to Australia. He was discharged from the RAAF on 25 December, 1944, and died in Melbourne on 16 March, 1946, he was buried in his home-state (Tasmania). His death was deemed attributable to war service.

* Bill Chorley, in BCL3/179, does not identify the following crew of Wellington X3744 as members of the RAAF - AUS408161 Sgt D W BEATTIE, AUS403718 Sgt C CHAPMAN and AUS403378 F/Sgt A V RITCHIE. Post-discharge death, discharged on 27.6.1945. No otherdetials regarding death in his service record.

401221 F/O Edmund Murray Hugh KNYVETT RAAF.

401221 F/O (ex-Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Edmund Murray Hugh KNYVETT RAAF, died at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, from a cerebral tumor, on 16 March, 1943.

F/O Knyvett, was a former school teacher with the Victorian Education Department. The following is his entry in the War Service Record 1939-1945 Education Department - Victoria - The Men and Women Who Returned (1959). (p.164):

Flight Lieutenant EDMUND M. H. KNYVETT enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on the 4th of January, 1941, and after training in bombing, air-gunnery and wireless was promoted to Sergeant on the 22nd of August, 1941. He embarked for the United Kingdom on the 19th of September, 1941. After a course of advanced training, he was posted in April, 1942, as Flight Sergeant to No.500 Squadron for flying duties. Next month, he joined 455 Squadron. In February, 1943, he was promoted Warrant Officer and, after undergoing further training with No, 1 Torpedo Training Unit and No. 5 Operational Training Unit, was commissioned to the rank of Pilot Officer. He was then posted as instructor to No. 7 Operational Training Unit in March, 1944. In the May following, he was transferred as instructor to No. 7 Operational Training Unit. Next month, he was promoted to Flying Officer. He had further training with No. 5 Operational Training Unit and in November, 1944, was posted to No. 10 R.A.A.F. Squadron, United Kingdom, for flying duties. On the 28th June, 1945, he was posted to Beccles (U.K.) for repatriation and arrived at No. Personnel Depot, Australia, on the 25th November, 1945. He received his promotion to Flight Lieutenant on the 28th of December, 1945, and his appointment was terminated on the 8th of January, 1946. He died at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, on the 16th March, 1946. Prior to enlisting he was teaching at School No. 4531, Stewart, via Red Cliffs, Victoria.

John Carter 1624759 , a Flight Mechanic, engines, attached to Number 22 MTRU , died in the British General hospital, Rangoon , from asphyxiation due to the accidental inhalation of vomit .

The current entry for him in this database is erroneous
