MALAYSIA.

406080 F/L Philip William MATTHEWS RAAF.

No.23 Sqn RAAF Liberator A72-348 was on a flight from Manila to Darwin when two engines failed over the Celebes Sea south of Zamboanga. The Pilot, 395 W/C John Edward HANDBURY RAAF, could not feather the propellers; in the ditching that resulted two men were killed: 406080 F/L (Nav.) Philip William MATTHEWS RAAF and passenger Lt I M POTTEN US Army Transportation Corps.

Just a tad more on the loss of No.23 Sqn RAAF Liberator A72-348:

No.23 Sqn RAAF Liberator left Nicholls Field, Philippine Islands, for Darwin at 0243Z on 9 April, 1946. The aircraft ditched south of Zamboanga, Midnap, The Philippines, due to failure of Nos 1 and 2 engines. Two of those on board were killed, and dinghies with eight survivors were located and rescued by surface vessels.

Leslie Falgate 169345 , was admitted seriously ill to Sedgefield EMS hospital on 22 March suffering with pneumonia and pleural effusion. He became dangerously ill and died of lympho Sarcoma of the bowels
