I have come accross this some years after you wrote it. My grandad was John Henry Rayns (Mid-Upper Gunner). He was in contact with many old Lank flyers and engineers/ground crew up until his death in 1988. His wife Jean is still alive and fairly well at the ripe old age of 97. Harry (as we all called him) flew with Fisher, Beamish etc. I did see an email about Beamish being a retired butcher and still around about seven years ago.

In November 2015, an Australian led expedition to the trace of the railway in Myanmar located the crash site of KH214 in the village of Anankwin (one of many spellings). Wreckage was recovered, including small aircraft parts, burnt wiring, and damaged 50 calibre cartridges. No large metal was found. The local Karen farmers would have scavenged any metal they found at the time, and since. The parts found by our expedition are presently in the museum at Thanbyuzayat.
Captain Sakai, the purported commander of the near-by POW camp, may have spun a story to the War Graves Team, leading to the memorial service conducted by Padre Babb at a bomb crater in the area. Some of his dates were wrong, his description of the crash, however, was reasonably accurate..

Ray Heninger passed away in Calgary Alberta. He worked for Imperial Oil. He has two children Gillian Heninger - she may use the surname Maitson - who last lived in Vancouver BC and Daryl Heninger who may be the son of Harold - but address unknown.

14 years have past since the last post on here, but for the record in my research as Curator of RAF Wethersfield Museum, 196 & 299 Squadrons were at the base from October 44 to January 45. The Mushroom Farm became the HQ of the SAS 20th Liasion Unit to the SAS 3rd and 4th Free French.
It was led by Major Oswald Carey-Elwes, his deputy was Captian Pat Smith (Sdrn Ldr RAF) and my Grandfather by very strange coindence Lt Adam Ross Stewart.
They dropped into France near Epernay late October a team of 12.

My Grandfather 352560 Flight Sergeant John England was lost on LST 420, I've paid my respects together with my father at many of the known graves in Oostende and Blankenberge. His name appears on panel 217 at Runnymede.

The dakota plane that crashed on 1/6/1944 have been found Just recently. Remains of crew members also found. One bracelet was found on which HG Tackaberry was inscripted. Contact me at richardyimto@gmail.com for details.

My grandad flew(co pilot)fz 686 on d day dropping airborne into France, arnham on Sept 18th 1944 dropping paratroopers and many others, have long book with info, think he left that call dog and went to Australia around jan 45

These posts are very old, and I don't know if anyone is still interested, but -
Sale was indeed shot down in May 1943, but survived and made his way back home via Gibraltar. I think that's why he was awarded the DSO. I understand he was awarded the DFC for crash landing a plane with a full complement of primed TIs on board after the bomb doors jammed. He ordered the rest of the crew to bale out, but one man's parachute was burned, so instead of baling out himself he flew it home. He managed to get clear before the whole lot went up.
As I understand it he was in one of four Halifax III's (his being HX325) of Sqdrn 35 shot down 20th / 21st January 1944 whilst on a massive raid on Leipzig. We lost many other planes and crew that night.
Squadron 35 (subsequently 635), was one of the elite Pathfinder Squadrons, which dropped TI (Target Indicator) incendiary bombs for the following aircraft to use as aiming points, so their navigation and bombing ...See More (https://developers.facebook.com/tools/comments#)

Hello there - John Vincent Brooke would have been my uncle had he lived longer. He was indeed flying to Anglesey having recently returned from training in Canada. As far as I have been informed het was flying in fog and crashed - no collision to my knowledge.

PZ395 & NZ963 were brought down near Bevern, but NOT the Bevern NW of Hamburg as stated above. People seem to have been confused by the fact there are two villages called Bevern. Sage, Cockburn, Baker & Fowler were all buried in the village of Bevern that is just south of Bremervorde. The location is almost due west of Hamburg, and a little to the south. (I have the MRES reports for these four men, who were exhumed on October 2nd 1946, and later reburied at Becklingen.)

All these comments are from 2002, but if Mark is still following, I visited John Cockburn's grave last year. I went to find my uncle's grave (AJ Fowler, navigator in the other mosquito brought down together with Sage & Cockburn's). Baker, Fowler, Sage & Cockburn are all buried side by side at Becklingen Cemetery, but they were originally buried in the Bevern village cemetery under a single wooden cross saying "Unknown British Airmen". Each two man crew was buried in a single coffin. They were dug up and identified by MRES 18 months after their deaths, and reburied at Becklingen. (By the way, the information above that the village of Bevern is 7km East of Elsmhorn is incorrect, though you'll find it in several places. There are actually two different villages of the same name, and the one near Elmshorn is the wrong one. The correct Bevern can be found by following the 71 south of Bremervorde.

14/15 March 1945 Lancaster PA214 227 Sqn Take off RAF Balderton 1705 hrs to bomb the Wintershall Synthetic Oil Plant. Intercepted and shot down at 23.18 by a Ju 88 night fighter piloted by Hptm Gerhard Friedrich NJG6 killing all the crew. All are buried in Durnbach War Cemetery. Most of the crew had been involved in a serious landing accident on return from Sassnitz a week previously. On the night of 16/17 March 1945, Hptm Friedrich collided with Lancaster PB785 576 Sqn near Stuttgart at 21:00 hours. Friedrich and his crew were killed in Ju 88 G-6 2Z+LB along with the seven crew of the bomber. Friedrich had been awarded the Ritterkreuz on the 12 March and married for only a couple of weeks at the time of his death.

Captain Eleanor (Susan) Slade was also a Girl Guide Captain (Leader) with Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire, Girl Guides. Her grave is in the old cemetery behind School Close in Stokenchurch. Is it possible to have more information about this? I found Spitfire's remains in the area and I'm conducting historical research.

Re George William Curry, his sister Olive Swanson Curry is still alive aged 105 years and lives with her daughter in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Hello. My father William Howlett was stationed at 45 Air School in Oudtshoorn until the end of WW2. He was an electrician in the ground crew. melaniejane, you mention the Ossewa Brandwag. My father was beaten up by them whilst on leave in (I think) Cape Town and was rescued by a farmer and his sons, who took him back to their farm to recuperate. Any details about that would be most welcome.

Hi I am searching for my granddads cousin who left Galway, Ireland to fight in the second world war.
His name was Dereck, his dad passed away and his mother headed back to England so he was raised by my Great grandmother who already had eleven other kids. We believe he kept the surname Curley and was very happy to adopt his new family. Times were tough.
I understand that he was a pilot and flew Lancaster bombers. My father remembers his grandmother reading letters from Dereck during the war. Unfortunately the letters stopped and despite prayers being said every evening Dereck did not return.
In those days as you are aware experiences were not shared openly so my dad knows very little of what happened after that.
When I googled Derek Curley there was a Derek Curley listed with 426 Sqn on your web page.

My father Edwin Harold Hansen flew with Evan Evans and spoke very highly of him He had a picture painted of him which I have today. my father flew with the 83rd and 97th. when his plane went down he was the only survivor.

Many years ago, my grandfather and uncle worked at St John's colliery during WW2.
My grandfather told me a story of a Spitfire that crashed near the colliery and the pilot was American.
He gave me what he said were several pieces of the plane that he took as a sovenir.
Apparently many people took pieces before the authorities arrived.
My grandfather passed away in 1977 and my Uncle died last Spring.
I only now came across this post.
If you are interested I can see if any other relatives have any information.

I was in 5003 sqd. 1958 to 1960 based at Wellsbourn Mountford ( detatched to RAF Abingdon ( new perimiter area and later to RAF Church Lawford) so still intrested in the old unit (Happy Days)

does anyone have any details at all about Captain Petar Todorovic of the Royal Yugoslav airforce , who flew Dorniers to safety from Yugoslavia to Greece and then Egypt in April 1941. He then flew as an RAF pilot for the remainder of the war, mainly Lancasters in the North Africa campaign. He survived the war.

My mother's husband, F/Sgt Harry Middleton, was wireless operator/air gunner in Sparke's crew. I have an Air Ministry letter addressed to my mother dated 13th April 1945, which, further to a letter of 30th June 1943, now informs her that the previously unknown location of their burial place had been found in somewhat unusual circumstances in March of 1945 by some RAF officers who's duty had taken them to the neighbourhood.
They'd ascertained that at 8.45 am in the morning of 11th December 1942, the Halifax in question crashed near Villeneuve-en-Montagne. Of the seven occupants, it was possible to identify only two, namely Pilot Officer D.R. Collier and Pilot Officer R.F. Watson. Resulting from the courageous determination of the Mayor, Monsieur Bourgoyne, they were all decently buried in the commune's cemetery when in despite of German activity the whole village attended the funeral. I have a photograph of the grave which I believe to have been taken then, which if my memory serves me correctly, was obtained and given to my mother latterly by a lady French Assistant at Pontefract Girls High School.
Two other photographs were received in the 1945 letter which appear to have been taken in March of that year one showing the grave lined each side by five young men and a wreath laid by the RAF officers. The other photograph is of the road to the cemetery full of what must be upwards of one hundred men women and children of the village.
In the photographs of the grave is to be seen an inscription referring to seven English airmen and two crucifix memorials giving the names of the two who were identified. The French 'authorities' had been able to salve a few personal belonging of some of the crew and a cignet ring engraved H.M. Was founded and in the belief that it could only have belonged to her husband it was sent to my mother. The letter concludes that it is hoped hat the knowledge - albeit belated - of the burial place and the receipt of the ring and the photographs may afford a measure of consolation in bereavement. ie two years and four months after having been reported missing presumed dead.

I found the pevious messages regarding James MacDonald very interesting.
My late father was a flight mechanic in 198sq and was a very close friend of Jimmy Mac as he was known. On the day of Jimmys death it hit my father very hard, each year on the anniversay of his last flight my father always drank a whisky and toasted jimmy with not only the bad memories but also the good ones.
Sadly Jim's wife gave birth whilst Jimmy was away from Canada being based in the UK, to a baby girl named Susan when news reached the base my father painted a canadian maple leaf on the plane together with the name of the baby daughter he never saw.
As a special tribute to both my father & Jimmy Mac l commisioned a painting to be done of the Typhon plaine banking out of Manston RAF base, if l remember some years later the same Typon was on a soeciate edition stamp by Roysl Mail..
My father kept in touch with Jimmy's family for several years until his health detriated it .

Checking out the MRES report: it says Sage and Cockburn were in HR356, while the Squadron record for Feb 1945 says NS963. Not sure what caused the discrepancy.

Hello Colin 1941, My name is Ryan. I am the grandson of Theodore Thorkilsen who was flying with your father the night their plane "op: Hamburg" was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Ellerbek, 14km NW of Hamburg. The two men who died were burried locally at Oblsdorf. My grandfather wrote a detailed memoir of that night, and the events that followed throughout his years as a POW. My grandfather wrote this book for his children and grandchildren. If you are interested, I would be happy to have a copy made for you.

I remember being told by my grandmother that it was thought that the single bomber had failed to find it's target in Liverpool and was looking for somewhere 'useful' to drop it's bombs. Geoffrey I was told was last is the queue rushing to the air-raid shelter.

Hi Joss I am a relative of Sergeant Maurice John Taylor who was shot down on 12th June 1944 at Ecurie, France. Since I visited the grave of Maurice some years ago the village has erected a memorial on the crash site. I have found pictures of the memorial but none of the ceremony. Do you have any further details as I have been researching this on and off for many years.

Initially things were hectic with only three weeks (including Christmas break) to prepare for first entry. Luckily our sergeant and f / sgt were prepared to roll up their sleeves& help with equipment to be built & items to be obtained and wired up. on training benches,
We also built mock ups so that pupils were aware of layout of Wellington's before actual flying.
This led to the eventual design and construction of the HARWELL BOX which became standard equipment at other OTU s to replicate flying conditions with movement , built in noise and vibration, We constantly updated and finished up with a quite sophisticated article, which could simulate anti aircraft fire and searchlight activity, and encouraged operators to record “enemy” activity as a means of plotting changing enemy tactics, was also proved useful as a platform for fault finding.

In April 1945, near the village where I have a house, crashed the British Spitfire fighter. The local people can say that the pilot was dead when they came to the plane, so they buried him at the village cemetery, but no one knew who was by name because at that time nobody check this. There was no priest in the place because he escaped for fear of German soldiers. After then Yugoslav Army, which was heading towards Trieste, where they met the 8th British Army, was informed of the event.
A few years later, British soldiers arrived from Trieste and excavated the body and transported it to unknown places. After the event, the airplanes were also loaded onto animal tracton wagon and taken away to unknown place.
I heard about the event from an older countryman, and then I wanted to find out who was a pilot, so I started to research almost a year ago with interviews the still living villagers from that period.

I know a bit about Ron Hemming his mother was my surigate grandmother so to speak , I know he was injured at some stage during the later stages of the war , I know he also saw active service , he was an only child Mrs Hemming took me under her wing when I was six until she passed when I was twelve she would talk about Ron and her husband she was a lovely lady I still have an Easter jacket she crocheted for me when I was six I'm fifty now and living in Australia , I would love a copy of a photo if at all possible.

Lyndon Sims owned a record shop in Brynmawr for many years. Many
thought him to be arrogant, and perhaps he was. He never appeared to care whether he sold anything, yet drove an Aston Martin, so it's probable he was independently wealthy. I always took him to be someone who'd been educated in public school.
At Christmas he would - free of charge -wire up loudspeakers throughout the high street and play Christmas songs for everyone's pleasure.
He died in 1999. His wife and three sons survived him.

My Dad - 904882 Flt. Sgt. John Henry Allen., DFM & Bar was bomb aimer on board R5626 OL - M when this photograph was taken. The skipper was John Eely Partridge DSO., DFC & Bar. Bremen was a night time raid and I think the last of the 1,000 bomber raids. OL - M I know, was lost with another crew.......

Me and my girlfriend Karan Pearson visited this crash site a few years ago, there wasn’t much left but scars on the landscape, we sat down for a brew and she found a knife ! We wrapped it up in tissue and took it to town and showed them it in the pub, we donated it to the museum / Visiter thing they were starting up in a disused church and even though it wasn’t much to look at they insisted on buying us drinks all night, bloody marvellous town ! Story of the Crash
A cold wind blew over the Advanced Landing Ground B80 Volkel on February 2nd 1945. The wind made the work for the ground mechanics and the pilots very hard. In spite of the bad weather five Typhoons nanaged to start late in the afternoon at five o'clock. Because of the strong wind, the engines of two Typhoons got overheated, but the pilots still managed to start with four aircraft. F / O Bernard Lyons flew in the second position with his Typhoon MN358, trunk code
HH-U. To the north-east of Venlo, the formation successfully attacked a German convoy. During their further search, Lyons was hit by German anti-aircraft guns. He turned directly to the west in order to get above liberated territory. He passed on his last position above the river Maas by radio. He then crashed south of the Americaanseweg and the Kanaalweg in the “Mariapeel”, a swamp area near Sevenum. Flight Lieutenant Lyons was found lifeless in the wreck.

I have been searching for links to any photos of this Greek Squadron with whom my father served as an RAF gunner and radio operator. His name Milton Clyde Lewis. Hi to you all out there trying to solve this mystery! Although I am the first time on your site I am glad to have noticed the great interest in one of the two aircraft which carried out that raid on Piestany! From what In have been able to research, the actual lettering on Stuart Newton Mays, 'Flame McGoon' , should read: TH- (all 418 RCAF Squadrons Mossies had these two initial letters before the hyphen) , and also couldnt find any further information regarding the correct complete lettering, I started reading and looking through the different sites available until I realised that the last letter should actually be identical with the one painted underneath the nose. So looking at the pictures of Flame McGoon the letter was a capital 'L'. Thus giving us all: TH-L plus the code at the rear end of the fuselage which for Flame McGoon was (DZ220) . So the full code should read: TH-L (DZ220)

Ronald and his crew are buried in St Chad's churchyard at Harpswell, just up the road from the old RAF Hemswell. Ronald's nephew lives in Australia and Ronald was a friend of my father and was Groomsman at my fathers wedding in October 1937. I am told by people who attended the wedding that his nickname was Curly.

Hi, I believe my maternal grandfather, was Stanislaw Malczyk, a W/O Rear-Gunner, with the Polish 1586th. SDF, based at Brindisi. He apparently flew Liberators, eventually he was shot down in August 1944, over Southern Poland, where he was actually born. He's buried in Krakow.

Just a comment W.F.Read was my father. Yes it is quite true that he was terribly badly injured and never flew again. My understanding of the accident is that he was on a scouting duty with a partner when they saw smoke from a fire below and his partner said to Dad, "go down and take a look Wally" he dived and only just managed to pull out of the dive before hitting the ground but hit a telegraph pole instead. The hurricane he was flying had just been serviced and apparently the reason for the service was to do with the difficulty in pulling out of a dive. There is little else I can add other than the accident occurs as a note in Gregor Lamb's "Sky over Orkney"

yep, that was my Grandfather Brian Stirling Tomlin. Died of cancer aged 64 in 1979. When he was sick in hospital not long before his passing he told my dad, his son in law - "Biggest cock up of my flying career and they gave me a bloody medal for it" - he got the DFC

Leigh was my great-great uncle. A couple other pieces of info on him - he was first cousin to KC Irving, founder of the Irving empire in new Brunswick. Leigh grew up with KC and lived with the Irvings for some of his childhood . He was also reportedly involved with bringing the Martin Mars aircraft to British Columbia for conversion and use a water bombers. I only met him once , at my grandfather's funeral in 1986 . He was dressed in a military beret and smoked a huge cigar . Quite a character even as an elderly man.

Yes, this was Pam Gollan. (She died 7th Jan 2000 in Chichester St Richards Hospital) She told me that she was once in an aircraft that had crashed, killing two on the ground, and "Thank God I wasn't the pilot". She told me she had burns to her hands and face. Incidentally, she's the only person I know to have flown a Hurricane with a 2 ton degaussing ring on it!

On night flying exercises while the local defences practised. Caught in the beams of 5 or 6 searchlights it dived and twisted keeping its specified height between 12,000 and 16,000ft then it suddenly plunged, it was followed by the lights for several thousand feet but soon lost , no of the crew had time to bale out although an escape hatch was found a mile from the wreckage. R5492 had logged over 600 hrs

P/O Stanley Arthur Fannon was my uncle.He took off from Speke airfield on a photo reconnaissance practice run. Suffering an engine failure he attempted to land on Allington golf course but hit the trees and caught fire and sadly died. His aircraft was Hurricane I - V6696 - MSFU.

In the early 70's I was a Flight Commander at the RAF College Cranwell, in the early days of what was known as 'The Graduate Entrant Scheme' which followed the RAF Cadetship scheme. One of the trophies awarded at the end of eac course was the 'Philip Sassoon Trophy - if my memory serves me correctly - it was awarded to the best student pilot. More information on this should be forthcoming from the RAF College Records Officer - RASF Cranwell.

WOW! Thanks for the information. My mother was born in Kristiansund N on May 22, 1942. She did not know about this because the adults never talked about the war in front of the kids- except to tell them to stay out of bombed out builiding, don't play in the rubble and don't cut through the cemetery on the way home from school (apparently alot of desperate men who had lost everything hung themselves in the cemetery with some regularity).

John Hollingworth was a friend of my father's during WW11. They were both posted at Wigtown. Scotland, July 1943 where my father was a gunnery instructor. F/S Hollingworth noted in my father's log book flying a Lysander T2 - 23.7.43. This is an old thread I know but came across it loojing for ifrmation about Brandon-Trye. Philip was the pilot of Lancaster ED627, EM-N of 207 Squadron on 12 ops. This aircraft completed almost 34 ops. before it was shot down on the 28th August 1943 with my cousin PO. Arthur Fitzgerald and his crew, all killed. In April 1945, near the village where I have a house, crashed the British Spitfire fighter. The local people can say that the pilot was dead when they came to the plane, so they buried him at the village cemetery, but no one knew who was by name because at that time nobody check this. There was no priest in the place because he escaped for fear of German soldiers. After then Yugoslav Army, which was heading towards Trieste, where they met the 8th British Army, was informed of the event.
A few years later, British soldiers arrived from Trieste and excavated the body and transported it to unknown places. After the event, the airplanes were also loaded onto animal tracton wagon and taken away to unknown place.
I heard about the event from an older countryman, and then I wanted to find out who was a pilot, so I started to research almost a year ago with interviews the still living villagers from that period.

Hi I'm not sure if this message will get to anyone who has a relative of the Lancaster crash September 3rd 1943. My uncle Flight Engineer Leslie J Milton was also aboard. It appears the details of the crash has always been unclear. My mother was told that the event was shrouded in secrecy and they had no way of knowing what really happened. My grandparents received a letter describing hearing the crash and the plane being on fire. I too would love to have any photos . My grand mother lost 3 sons in the war and kept their pictures on the side board I have them now. Unfortunately I can't remember which one is Leslie or Percy. My grandmother spoke about Leslie a lot . How proud she was that he got his flying wings. She said he loved being in the RAF. Leslie was very good at playing the piano accordion. He is buried with one of his brothers and his sister . Sadly Arthur was lost at sea.

I'm doing some research on my uncle, Jack Goodwin, who was an armourer in the RAF in Burma during WW2. From his paperwork he was with 292 Sqdn and then 1348 Flt. According to this Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._292_Squadron_RAF
1348 Flt was an offshoot of 292 Sqdn which was an air-sea rescue/recon unit. There's no mention of Lancasters in there.

Robert Joseph Wakeling - I'm researching the history of 576 Sqn - Wakeling was an air gunner who is listed in the 576 ORB as flying just one operation on 09/10 Apr 45 (Kiel). His service numbers were 1802594 and 189073 on commissioning on 10 Dec 44 from Sgt (Gazetted 30 Jan 45, p630), he was promoted to Fg Off on 10 Jun 45 (Gazetted 13 Jul 45, p3612).
The 576 ORB has him arriving from 625 Sqn Kelstern on 05 Apr 45 and flew his one operation in W G Hammond's crew.

Hello Allen Someone from :Stichting Crash Research in Aviation Society Holland 1940-1945 in Aalsmeer in the Netherlands asked me if I could find more information about the crash in Mijdrecht that was in 2015. I found your information and told them that everyone had suvived the war.
John Hubert Hall, Flight Lieutenant, RCAF. (went by Hubert) He was a pilot of a Wellington IV on the successful bombing run to Lubeck, flight serial number: Z1203, crash landed near Amsterdam. 142 Sqrdn (QT:O) Record I have comes from AIR27/973
I read that Ab Jansen was the only one who had seen the Wellington the Germans let him on the site and he wrote a book about it i'm still looking for that book.

He had previously been an air gunner in Lancaster bombers. He (like so many) spoke little about the war only that he had been a mid-upper gunner and the worst feeling was when coming to breakfast the days after a raid to see so many empty tables when crews had not come home. He was flying a Photo Reconaissance Spitfire IV on a high altitude photo training exercise to the Belfast area. He Possibly over flew Dyce airfield, now Aberdeen airport, and ran out of fuel over the North Sea. Another possibility is oxygen failure. His body was washed up in Norway. Public · 2w

He married a polish woman and traveled back to Maryland with her. He died in August 2005. I do know that Romaniszyn did arrive home because I have a picture of him that was sent to my grandfather. I am not sure what happened to Wozniak or Abramik but I know they went to pow camps. I have some letters from them to my grandfather but they are in polish. I only know english so it will take awhile to figure what happened. Also I know that Jankowski died on March 05, 1943 because my grandfather has a picture of his tombstone that says the date. My father and I are always hunting for information about him. I couldn't have found this at a better time, as my father is getting quite old, and in hospital right now. Thank you so very much! I can't tell you how much reading and being able to share this with him means to me, and even moreso him. His fathers body has never been recovered, and he has always sought answers. After a lifetime of military service himself, my father found very few. Thanks to the online world these days, and efforts like yours I can give him one last good one. This is far more detailed than anything we've ever obtained. Also it may help us and the dna based recovery program here in Canada narrow things down a bit more, and bring him home one day. <3 Keep up the great work!
