MATTHEWS, Derrick Hugh - LAC - 1737192 - registered Downham, Norfolk. The Lincolnshire Echo of May 29th 1946 reported the following:

Airman killed: crushed against hangar door by truck
Officer did not know engine was in gear
Standing outside a hangar at Marham R.A.F. station, norfolk, in which a dance was in progress, on Saturday evening, Ldg. Acm. Derrick Hugh Matthews, of Saxby, near Spridlington, was fatally crushed against the hangar door when an American Army truck suddenly moved forwarrd. At the inquest at Marham evidence was given that an R.A.F. officer started the engine of the truck, not knowing that it had been left in gear.
A verict of "Accidental Death" was recorded by the King's Lynn Coroner, Mr. Donald F. Jackson, who exonerated the officer, Flt.-Lieut. George Bates, from blame. There was no evidence, he said, to suggest that Bates was the worse for drink at the time.

401806 F/L Bruce Leonard TERDICH (of No.1 Personnel Depot, Melbourne), died of an unspecified illness at 115 Australian General Hospital, Heidelberg, Victoria, on 25 May, 1946.

GALE, Edward Bagley - Sqn/Ldr(Pilot) - C/1618 - RCAF - A.F.C - Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey - [ Mustang III - KH505 - RAE ].

from the Court of Inquiry report

He took off for a high speed dives from high altitude for the purpose of providing data for rersearch on the behaviour of wing sections near the speed of sound. He previously carried eight of these dives.

At approx. 11.10 an aircraft subsequently identified as Mustang KG505 was heard over Broxbourne in a high speed power dive. ... witness observed this aircraft suddenly appear diving phenomenally high speed and at a very steep angle. The aircract disintegrated on crashing, killing the pilot instantly.

S/Ldr Gale who was regarded as aan exceptionally capable and careful pilot has a total of 2906 hors solo on all types, of which 17 hrs were on Mustangs.

Henry Rayner 249005 , attached to Number 20 SFTS, died of a heart attack, he had first experienced heart problems in February 1944
