JAPAN.

133062 LAC Allan John DURRANT RAAF.

No.5 Airfield Construction Squadron RAAF, IWAKUNI, JAPAN.

At approximately 2340 hours on the 5th June 1946 No.133062 LAC DURRANT A. J. was driver of Service Vehicle No.207287 returning to camp from BCAIR Station IWAKUNI, on conclusion of a duty run. On approaching the railway crossing near TOYO Camp the vehicle ran off the road over an embankment and overturned, pinning LAC DURRANT across the body. On receipt of report of accident at TOYO Camp personnel immediately proceeded to the scene and lifted the vehicle enough to allow the body to be lifted clear. LAC DURRANT was dead when placed in the ambulance and taken to BCAIR Hospital IWAKUNI. Arrangements were made for the burial to take place at KURE War Cemetery on 8th June 1946. At 1130 hours on 8th June 1946 a service was conducted by Padre K. C. W. BECKETT the unit Chaplain was held and attended by Commanding Officer, Officers and approximately 100 members of the unit. The burial took place at Kure War Cemetery at 1515 hours on 8th June 1946 and the service was conducted by Padre R. J. ALLEN BCAIR Station IWAKUNI Church of England Chaplain assisted by Padre BECKETT. The burial was attended by 3 officers, 2 Senior NCO.'s and 24 Airmen of the unit.

DWIGHT, Charles Robert Rob - F/Lt - 42596 - the Gloucester Journal of June 15th 1946 reported the following:

TEST PILOT KILLED IN CRASH
A test pilot was killed and his passenger injured when a plane crashed in a wheatfield at Malmesbury. The pilot was Flt-Lieut Charles R. Dwight, D.F.C., of Berkhampstead, Herts, the passenger being Mr. Alec Trimble, civilian fitter, whose parents redside at Tetbury. Flt-Lieut Dwight was senior test pilot at a Wiltshire aerodrome. The plane (a Mosquito) was seen to be gradually losing height. It cleared a wood and levelled up, but then the port wing dipped and the plane crashed, but did not catch fire.

Just a thought about Hemingway, Keehneed on 2 June was also with 620 Sqn, could there be a link?

John Charles Hemingway 3031421 , was admitted seriously ill to Number 5 RAF hospital on 18 May, becoming dangerously ill on 23 May , where he died of enteric fever
