K5314 - Engine cut and hit wheat sheaf and overturned in forced landing, 2 mile South
of Ollerton, Notts, 05/09/38
'PLANE OVERTURNS NEAR OLLERTON FORCED LANDING *IN CORNFIELD R.A.F. single-seater fighter machine overturned after making a forced landing in a cornfield near to Ollerton Station about 11 a.m. yesterday, but the pilot (who was alone in the machine) escaped unhurt. The plane, a Gloster Gauntlet, was piloted by Pilot-Officer Piddock (sic). He was taken to the Hucknall R.A.F, station by car. aerodrome sent out number of RAF. men to lake charge of the wreckage. FROM SCOTLAND The machine was bound for Hucknall from Montrose (Scotland) and It is stated that engine trouble necessitated the forced landing in a field of Mr. J. H Fox’s Carr Bracks Farm. Farm hands were at work a few yards away, but one was in any danger. Landing soft ground the machine ran into some sheaves wheat and completely overturned. The propeller was broken, and the undercarriage and one of the wings were damaged. The pilot climbed out unaided, and, according to an eye-witness, he bad apparently escaped without a scratch.
