MAY, Edmund Francis Samuel, S/L (108536) - Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment, Beaulieu - - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 8 June 1950. Recommendation found by Pavel Vancata in Public Record Office AIR 2/10073, drafted when he had flown 2,182 hours, 425 on current duties, 85 in past six months. Ministry of Supply sponsored.

Squadron Leader May, as test pilot, has been responsible for developing the Hastings Hamilcar glider towing technique, which has involved a total of 90 hours flying on the combination of a period of 2 ½ years. Each take off has involved flying for a considerable period below safety speed, when the result of an engine failure would probably be fatal. Under full load conditions the period below safety speed is about five minutes. In July 1949, he carried out the Hastings Hamilcar tropical trials at Shaibab. This he did most efficiently and expeditiously, showing commanding drive and ingenuity in overcoming the difficulties which invariably arise on this type of detachment. In addition to his work with the Hastings Glider Squadron Leader May has, during his three and a half years with this unit, flown a total of 29 types ranging from multi-engined aircraft to light gliders. Most of this flying has been on experimental work for the Ministry of Supply. He has proved himself to be a first class pilot and has done much by his example and enthusiasm to raise the standard of flying at the unit.

DUNCAN, Adam Cooper, Flight Sergeant (546336) - No.1 Parachute and Glider Training School, Upper Heyford – Air Force Medal – awarded as per London Gazette dated 8 June 1950. Drafted when he had flown 203 hours, 203 on present duties, 28 in previous six months. Found in Public Record Office Air 2/10307 by Pavel Vancata.

Flight Sergeant Duncan has been consistently reliable and thorough in his duties as a Parachute Jumping Instructor. He has instructed several Royal Air Force Medical Teams which include members of Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service. By his expert airmanship and painstaking methods and confident manner, he has instilled confidence whilst in the aircraft and prior to making parachute descents. He has instructed several senior officers in parachuting and these officers have always spoke very highly of his patience, care, skill, confident manner and expert airmanship when despatching parachutists. Flight Sergeant Duncan has completed 253 parachute descents, both from balloon and aircraft, and he has also completed 203 hours flying time. During the past six months he has completed 46 parachute descents and 28 hours flying time. He has been a parachuting instructor for six years and served with parachute training units in Italy during the war. Flight Sergeant Duncan has set a very fine example and he has been a tower of strength to the Parachute and Glider Training School.

KITCHING, Denis Albert, Flight Sergeant (515241) – Royal Air Force - Headquarters, Transport Command - British Empire Medal – awarded as per London Gazette dated 8 June 1950. Recommendation found by Pavel Vancata in Public Record Office AIR 2/10073.

Flight Sergeant Kitching has been employed as a Clerk in the Principal Medical Officer’s Department at this Command Headquarters since December, 1947, and has also acted as Chief Clerk for long periods. He has received consistent assessments as Excellent and has been repeatedly specially recommended for promotion. This N.C.O. displays outstanding ability and keenness. He obtains the best results from his subordinates, gives assistance to the staffs of all unit Sick Quarters, and has an imperturbable outlook. Owing to the many changes of Medical Staff, both at Headquarters (Unit) and in the Command generally, Flight Sergeant Kitching’s advice has been most valuable, and he is largely responsible for smooth and amicable continuity between Headquarters (Unit) and Groups and Units. His example serves as an incentive to all juniors and makes him in effect a first class “Recruiting Sergeant” for the Service. He has given outstanding service to the Royal Air Force in the rank of Flight Sergeant since 1942.
