I have lost track of the source of the following but as they were both reported in the London Gazette without citations, the following may be of interest.
BERRY, Leslie Frederick, F/L (77960, RAFVR*) - No.622 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 6 June 1944. Citation from Air Ministry Bulletin 14171.
Flight Lieutenant Berry has completed a large number of operational sorties, including several against Berlin. On two occasions his aircraft has been attacked by an enemy fighter. Each time his accurate return fire has probably caused the destruction of the enemy. A courageous, determined and efficient air gunner, this officer has also proved to be an excellent squadron gunnery leader.
Originally recommended 5 March 1944 by W/C R. Swales when he had flown 33 sorties (193 hours 55 minutes). He was Squadron Gunnery Leader.
Flight Lieutenant Berry has now completed 33 operational sorties which include several to Berlin. On one occasion when bombing Berlin his aircraft was attacked by an enemy aircraft. Both he as Rear Gunner and and the Mid-Upper Gunner opened fire and claim this aircraft as probably destroyed.
On a recent occasion his aircraft was attacked by an enemy aircraft over Hanover; he returned the enemy’s fire and the enemy aircraft dived to earth in flames. This was claimed as destroyed.
His enthusiasm and keenness for operational sorties is unbounded, and he has proved himself not only as Gunner, but especially as Gunnery Leader to be extremely efficient and his devotion to duty is above reproach.
This was endorsed 5 May 1944 by the Commanding Officer, Station Mildenhall - “Flight Lieutenant Berry has proved himself to be a courageous, determined and efficient Gunner and a sound leader. Award recommended.” Further endorsed by the Air Officer Commanding, No.32 Base, and on 25 March 1944 by the Air Officer Commanding, No.3 Group. The sortie list was as follows:
